The Bicycle Racing Thread 2014

Oh, fuck it. Lets look back twenty years shall we?

edit: On reflection this probably could have gone in the Armstrong thread :D

Pluses:cool bikes, stylish gear including hairnet helmets, commentary via telephone:cool:

minuses:totally unsubtle 'we have the best pharmacology' tactics.

Mapei (son of Gewiss) did exactly the same thing in '96 with a 1-2-3 at Paris Roubaix and the Mapei DS deciding the podium order over the radio:rolleyes:

Pretty sure there is some comedy commentary on youtube of David Duffield doing his very best to maintain a sense of excitement in the closing stages of that race.

On the plus side, Martin looking like he's coming into form just in time for Giro.

And if he's able to breeze past most of the best puncheurs in the world on the Mur on a warm dry day at this time of year, they must have finally sorted out his allergies. Last year he could have just been lucky with the terrible Spring keeping the pollen count down.

Just noticed that the Tour of Turkey starts this weekend. Also just noticed that Juanjo Cobo sides for Torku Seker Spor.

That's the winner sorted then.

Tips for tomorrow? I'm backing Kwiatowski out of loyalty to OPQS but will also scour the 100 and 150/1 riders for some e/ew action.

Dan Martin ftw @ 8.00. Not sure about outsiders though. Bardet is *starting* to look interesting now he's drifted out to 51.00 but not convinced, and sounds like they'll be riding for Betancur again. Arredondo @ 201.00 looks interesting.

edit: have gone for small e/w bets on Arredondo @ 201.00 and Geschke @ 126.00

Looking forward to see how Cavendish and his pistachio nuts fair. We get it Mark.....you have discovered pistachio nuts.

And to think I thought that Martin getting beaten at the end by Valverde was the most annoying way a bike race could end. Jesus.

Not sure I want to live in a world where Gerrans has won two monuments. Especially since I had him on the same betting slip as Martin but took him off.

Dan Martin must be gutted.

I do have to give Gerrans some credit for overachievement. There's no flies on him. He's basically Valverde if Valverde had half the talent and twice the brains.

But that was an atrocious race. And that moment where he hit the deck and an apparent Martin win turned into a win for Valverde or Gerrans will remain one of the most sickening instants I've seen in a bike race. It was proper remote control through the tv stuff.

I really don't think I've ever been more bored or more aggravated by a week of classics.

Pistachio nuts:D

Taaramae going for the win? Or will Cobo go full Turku?

edit: Rebellin in there too. How about a Cobo, Rebellin, LuLu podium?

The sprints at the Tour of a Turkey have been embarrassingly easy for Cavendish given that in theory it's a reasonable field.

OPQS seem to have got a train that works; lets hope they bring most of them to Le Tour but surely they have some hopes for a good GC placing this year as well?

Spectacular views all day from Turkey. What an extraordinary looking plce, beautiful.

He won it well Viviani, it looked like he had more left. Getting towed along by the cars today was ridiculous, can't remember who it was...outright liberty.
