Taking a bike on a train from Highbury & Islington to Welwyn Garden

Does anyone know if this is only possible during off peak hours? So before 4pm presumably?

This is something of a FAQ round here/

Ok step one is to find out what train company you are using.

www.nationalrail.co.uk, and put the details into the journey planner.

click for full details of the service, and you'll get a link for a cycle policy

which in this instance is rather complex

We welcome passengers with bicycles on services where they can be safely accommodated. Fully folding bicycles can be carried at any time.

However, we are unable to carry non-folding or partially folding bicycles:
At any time between Drayton Park and Moorgate
At any time between Moorgate and Farringdon
On Great Northern route trains south of Stevenage and Hertford North timed to arrive in London between 0700 and 0930 or depart from London between 1600 and 1900 Monday to Friday (excluding Bank holidays)
On Great Northern route trains between Cambridge and Ely that are timed to arrive or depart Cambridge between 0745 and 0845 with the exception of the 0715 and 0745 departures from London King's Cross Monday to Friday (excluding Bank holidays)
On Thameslink route trains travelling towards London that are timed to arrive or pass through any central London station between 0700 and 1000 or travelling away from London and timed to depart or pass through any central London station between 1600 and 1900Monday to Friday (excluding Bank holidays)
On replacement bus services unless otherwise stated in associated publicity
On any train where your bicycle may cause obstruction to other customers (i.e. where a number of people are standing) or when a member of staff asks you to remove your bicycle

Bicycles can be carried at any time:
On trains north of Stevenage except where shown above
Between Stevenage and Hertford North
Between Bedford and Luton Airport Parkway

No chance of getting it on at Highbury & Islington. I have seen people try and fail!!

Drayton park is just up the road though so best bet is to cycle there and hop on :)

If you've got all day, best time to do this would be something like 11am- after the rush hour and before any daytrippers think about going home. If you've no chance during the day, try around 8-9pm, after the evening rush hour and most of the day trippers go home and before the evening lot head home.

Coming the other way into London, around 3pm (coming into London after the daytrippers and before the rush hour and evening vistors) or again around 9 (after most people coming in for the evening have travelled)

Thanks. Very helpful advice :)

Unfortunately i don't have all day so can't really pick and choose my times. Was hoping to get the latest train possible before the 4pm peak starts. But you're saying i wouldn't be able to get on at highbury and islington anyway....? Why is this - if bikes are allowed during off peak hours...

Cycling all the way may be an easier option. Especially if it's a nice day. Will have to investigate route tomorow.

I think the platforms you need at Highbury and Islington are below ground and only accessed by escalator, so they don't allow bikes. I know plenty of people who take their bikes into Drayton Park every day and then ride into central London.

If you ever have more time and you're coming from East London, you can cycle all the way up the canal towpath from Limehouse to Hertford and then cross to Welwyn on the Cole Green Way, which is a disused rail line. Lovely.

Sorry but thats rubbish, the escalators go down to the Tube line(Victoria),you take the stairs to get the overland platform. Which BTW is massively oversubscribed in both directions from H&I and seems always to be a masssive crush to get on/off....which is probably why they are so anal about bikes.

Ok, so i've decided i'm going to avoid the train and cycle down to Welwyn Garden this afternoon. But I'm going to need to get the train back. I need to end up in Stratford. So was hoping to get the train from Welwyn Garden to Highbury & Islington and then change and get another train from High & Is to Stratford.
Is this really going to be a nightmare?
I can carry my bike up and down stairs and it's going to be about 9.30pm so hours after the rush hour is over.

Or can anyone suggest a better route?

You should be fine at H&I that time of night. You do not need to go through any barriers to get to the Overground platform. Just up the escalator.

Point of order: The platforms for Welwyn are actually next to and on the same level as the Victoria Line platforms.

ok wait a minute, i'm confused now. I'll be getting off the train from Welwyn at Highbury and Islington. I'll need to get from that platform to the silverlink/overground train that goes to Stratford. Are there normal stairs that i can take to get to this platform? Stairs are fine. I'm going to struggle a bit if there are only escalators...

There are only escalators leading up to the Overground. But at that time of night they should be fairly quite.

What time are you leaving?

Why do you want to go to Welwyn Garden is shitty anyhow?

well i did it. Had a lovely cycle to Welwyn garden in the afternoon. The train ride home was not quite so lovely. Got confused at Welwyn garden station and ended up hiking my bike through the shopping centre and up the escalators  Then at Highbury & Islington, had to deal with both escalators AND several flights of stairs. No staff said anything though. And people were nice. I had several offers of help.
