Thinking of going here for Christmas. Anyone been? Any tips for travelling round Syria?

I hear ya
Take the bus between cities/towns. Go to Damascus, Hamah, Palmyra, Dayr Az-Zawr, Alleppo. Wander round them, see the souks/old quarters, drink tea/coffee, eat chicken and humus and meet people. Syrians are among the most friendly I've ever met.

So a scarf, some gloves and an umbrella may be in order. Cheers Spion, will look up those places in my guide book. A good friend went there six years ago and had a great time.

Me, too. Still waiting on gf to see if that's where she wants to go. I looked at flights last week and they were only £400. Shooting up fast.

Soldiers holding hands is one of the sights that sticks in my mind from being there. And posters of Assad's dead son in various outfits. And deserts with random herds of camels and shoals of what appeared to be black bin liners blowing around. And a guy befriending me and putting his watch on my wrist in Dayr az-Zawr. He gave me his name and address - his last name was also the name of his village, so clearly a tribal thing going on.

Not that they've come down, just got directed to a different site to find them. I am going to try not to think about it again until the end of tomorrow - tomorrow I get paid and will get the chance to corner my boss on the money I'm owed that'd pay for the whole thing.
