Summer hair ideas

This is aimed at those of you with long hair especially - what do you do with it in summer?

It's too hot for me to have it down all the time, and being in and out of the pool doesn't help.

Any style ideas? I can just about manage a ponytail and a bun..there must be more exciting things to do with hair, surely?

i find having a fringe a massive pita when i'm swimming a lot: never get it regularly cut so it's always in my eyes

i mostly do buns, it's too long for a high ponytail atm and low ones are just annoying. i regularly do plaits, and i have a thing i do with two elastics per plait: one at top, one at bottom, then you poke the endy bits through the top elastics on the opposite side: not too heidi/schoolgirl nicely off the neck :) it's my go-to festi style as it can also be slept in

1) I recommend that you try the articles and forum at www.longhaircommunity.com Their styling suggestions are classed not just by length but by hair type.
2) French pleat (the one where you put your hair into a ponytail with one hand, twist it utnil it starts to want to double up on itself, then sort of tuck it in a long vertical roll against your head and pin it there)
3) French braid. If you don't want anything hanging down, you can tuck the end upwards inside the hair where it's plaited against the back of your head.
3) Dutch braid (like a French braid, but the plaited bit sticks out because you plait each strand under instead of over).
4) Heidi/ballerina plaits - one each side, then take them around your head and pin in place.
5) Garland twist - take a small section of your hair (slightly above one ear) and begin twisting it against the side of you head, while working around and picking up more hair as you go. When you've gone right the way around, hide the ends and pin in place.
6) Garland braid/plait - as with 5 but plaited in, similar to how you'd do a French braid, but working sideways instead of downwards.
7) Half up half down do - with variations on whether you plait bits of the top or bottom, and whether you twist the top bits or not.
8) Divide up your hair and make as many skinny plaits as you can be bothered with, then twist them, bun them or whatever for a slightly different look.
9) Divide your hair into 2 tangle free sections, and tie a reef knot with them. Probably better if used to hold your hair back than to keep it up when active.
10) Rope braid - it's difficult to explain but you can see plenty of how to pages if you google for it. Basically you twist a few sections of your hair, then lay them against each other in the opposite direction to the one they're twisted in and they form a rope as they relax against each other.

I must learn how to do some of this stuff. I can barely do a regular plait. I love French plaits though, and have paid my hairdresser in the past to do a french plait all across the front of my head and then curl the back.

Really? I imagined you as being v.young wb.
I must learn all this stuff if I ever have children...maybe it's easier to do on someone else? And definitely easier on curly, thicker hair. Mine is thin and slippery.

I'm shit at plaiting/updoing hair too  in my defence my own hair is very short and my eldest's hair is really really fine and floaty.

Again, try the longhair community site - it's got plenty of suggestions for how to handle fine textured hair as it is, as well as what will give it a bit more grip and/or bulk without damaging it.
i feel the need to add that i'm a weaver/spinner/knitter and i still can't do french plaits. that shit is HARD :(
I can't do them while looking in a mirror to save my life, but let me plait by touch, or on somebody else and it's dead easy. It's not hard, once your fingers have learnt where they need to be.

I can French plait someone else's hair with no problem but I can't do my own. I just stick mine up in a ponytail or messy bun when it gets hot.

feels odd asking greebs to let her fingers do their magic on me :hmm: but fuckit, i'm on holiday :D
You know how you reach down and pick the hair up when working on somebody else's head? Well, if it's your own hair, you need to bring your hands up from under the hair, and sort of scoop up the section you want to pick up.

low bunches or braids on holiday - keeps it off your neck and you can still lay your head back comfortably to sunbathe.

And if you don't want them hanging down your back you can use a couple of mini claw clips to wrap them flat around your head.

low, yes, but if you wrap them high you can't wear a hat - and hats are good for you in very hot countries.

Point taken about the hat. I meant they'd more or less follow your hairline around the back then up towards each ear, which should leave room for a hat.

Freaky, I do this too. Although actually I haven't for ages. Heidi braids I do a lot.
