Spy/Master

To pick up the baton , it's a moderately diverting period spy drama, 'inspired' by real people and events.

It's set in Romania in the 1989s. The protagonist Victor Godeanu is the head of the foreign intelligence service, and also a trusted confidante of the Ceaușescus.

However, on the downlow he also runs a luxury goods snuggling ring, is negotiating a 'Pilgrim' deal with the Bundesrepublik to repatriate German-Romanians (for hard currency), is a KGB source, has an on/off affair with a Stasi agent, and is looking to defect to America. Throw into the mix also a loveless marriage to an alcoholic former actress, and an art student daughter who appears to be channelling a Mike-from-Stranger-Things aesthetic whilst having no discernible artistic talent.

Overall, not terrible, but doesn't have the period pizazz of Kleo or the Deutschlands, is not as espionagey as Traitors or The Game or Tinker Tailor, doesn't really dig deep into what Romania was like at the time, lacks any real sense of jeopardy, and has a lead who isn't really likeable or unlikeable - just 🤷

On the plus side: slightly less overused setting, and only 6 episodes. Think it is on Sky, and available to buy from Apple and Prime.
