Soundtrack for when Thatcher dies

strummerville

vinyl lover
Lets face it, it's coming soon and for some not soon enough. It's time to start compiling the definitve soundtrack for that glorious day.

No1 on the list for me, 'Tramp the Dirt Down'

I saw a newspaper picture from the political campaign
A woman was kissing a child, who was obviously in pain
She spills with compassion, as that young childs
Face in her hands she grips
Can you imagine all that greed and avarice
Coming down on that childs lips

Well I hope I dont die too soon
I pray the lord my soul to save
Oh Ill be a good boy, Im trying so hard to behave
Because theres one thing I know, Id like to live
Long enough to savour
Thats when they finally put you in the ground
Ill stand on your grave and tramp the dirt down

When england was the whore of the world
Margeret was her madam
And the future looked as bright and as clear as
The black tarmacadam
Well I hope that she sleeps well at night, isnt
Haunted by every tiny detail
cos when she held that lovely face in her hands
All she thought of was betrayal

And now the cynical ones say that it all ends the same in the long run
Try telling that to the desperate father who just squeezed the life from his only son
And how its only voices in your head and dreams you never dreamt
Try telling him the subtle difference between justice and contempt
Try telling me she isnt angry with this pitiful discontent
When they flaunt it in your face as you line up for punishment
And then expect you to say thank you straighten up, look proud and pleased
Because youve only got the symptoms, you havent got the whole disease
Just like a schoolboy, whose heads like a tin-can
Filled up with dreams then poured down the drain
Try telling that to the boys on both sides, being blown to bits or beaten and maimed
Who takes all the glory and none of the shame

Well I hope you live long now, I pray the lord your soul to keep
I think Ill be going before we fold our arms and start to weep
I never thought for a moment that human life could be so cheap
cos when they finally put you in the ground
Theyll stand there laughing and tramp the dirt down

The Day That Thatcher Dies by Hefner - on repeat

We will laugh the day that Thatcher dies,
Even though we know it's not right,
We will dance and sing all night.

I was blind in 1979, by '82 I had clues,
By 1986 I was mad as hell.

The teachers at school, they took us for fools,
They never taught us what to do,
But Christ we were strong, we knew all along,
We taught ourselves the right from wrong.

And the punk rock kids, and the techno kids,
No, it's not their fault.
And the hip hop boys and heavy metal girls,
No, it's not their fault.

It was love, but Tories don't know what that means,
She was Michelle Cox from the lower stream,
She wore high-heeled shoes while the rest wore flat soles.

And the playground taught her how to be cruel,
I talked politics and she called me a fool,
She wrapped her ankle chain round my left wing heart.

Ding dong, the witch is dead, which old witch?
The wicked witch.
Ding dong, the wicked witch is dead.

Helga did a CD for this years back and this was the tracklisting:

klaus nomi: ding dong! the witch is dead
elvis costello: tramp the dirt down
hefner: the day that thatcher dies
ewan maccoll: the grocer
oi polloi: fuck everybody who voted tory
specials: ghost town
robert wyatt: shipbuilding
the exploited: maggie
the beat: stand down margaret
morrissey: margaret on the guillotine
pinhead gunpowder: at your funeral
green day: ha ha you’re dead
lou reed: perfect day]

There is so definitely an old thread about this somewhere in the Urban Music archives, can someone did it out, or has it died before Thatcher did?

I have the Songs for a Dead Thatcher compilation. Could well be the same tracklisiting as longdog's, but mine was compiled by a former (?) Urbanite whose boardname I fear I've forgotten

Here are the tracks

Klaus Nomi : Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead
Elvis Costello : Tramp the Dirt Down
Hefner : The Day That Thatcher Died
Ewan McColl : The Grocer
Oi Polloi : Fuck Everybody who Voted Tory
Specials : Ghost Town
Robert Wyatt : Shipbuilding
The Exploited : Maggie
The Beat : Stand Down Margaret
Morrissey : Margaret On the Guillotine
Pinhead Gunpowder : At Your Funeral
Green Day : Ha Ha You're Dead
Lou Reed : Perfect Day

Listening to it now!! :p

And fuckin hury up and die Thatch, preferably just before Strawberry Fair or Glasto or similar in 2008 .. while I'm still undecrepit enough to dance** :p

**Last sentence above a pre-emptive 'backatcha' to all those who as night follows day, turn up on threads like this to pofacedly whine and whinge about 'tastelessness' when people celebrate the prospect of the Evil Monsteress's death ...

Maybe every thread is a rerun in the end. Given how long this board has been going now, can any thread ever claim to be truely original?

Still glad to see The Notsensibles never made the list.
