Shane Warne - RIP

Yeah I was shocked to hear this as well. Hot on the heels of Rodney Marsh, who would have loved to have kept to Warne, I'm sure.

Great bowler, great character. I also enjoyed his commentary - had a vocabulary all of his own, but there was never any malice in it.

Wow. Saw the news about Rod Marsh this morning so thought you'd got this wrong somehow. 52? Christ. Horrible personality. And one of the greatest bowlers ever, no question.

RIP

I was quite shocked to see this. He could come across as a bit of a knobhead a lot of the time but in that actually quite likeable way some Ozzies have about them, and could be an insightful pundit, he certainly genuinely cared about cricket. There's hardly been a spinner since he played who doesn't seem to have a story about how Warne took time out to talk to them about their game and encourage them. And that's before you get onto what a great player he was.

shocking and sad, did seem like a good guy. enjoyed him as a commentator too, clearly someone who mastered his craft with hard work and dedication (and a sprinkling of genius), as he seemed to know everything about spin bowling. oh and Liz Hurley

:(Ah, bugger.

I was a child if that ashes era. As much as wiggins got me into cycling, a summer (and then lifetime) spent trying to emulate that one that savagely turns away from the right hander. From a guy that looked a lot more like 'me' than Athers, Stewart or anyone else.

RiP. Can't think of a more annoying (and sometimes annoyingly brilliant) commentator...But the science and relateableness he brought to the sexiest 'move' in all sport changed my world  :(

Yeah one of the great things about cricket is that there is (even now, just about) room at the top for a real range of people in a way a lot of sports don't have and Warne was a great example of that. He was obviously never going to be a Pat Cummins type was he, but he was an all time great regardless.

Wow that is a shock. Probably the greatest cricketer of recent times. 52, fuck. Ill be that in 2 weeks.
RIP.

There is a live feed of tweets and the like on the beeb news app. Brought a tear to my eye reading how many people that knew him will be feeling a huge loss. I think the word legend is overused. But he is a true cricketing legend.

I met him briefly once as well, and a couple of friends knew him quite well. He was very generous with his time and not at all up himself. By no means are all former players who hang around at test matches (and there are a lot) like that.

The thing for me about Warne as a bowler wasn't just that he reintroduced, brilliantly, the art of leg spin - he was bloody good at what he did with a cricket ball - but he seemed to be maybe the best cricketer ever at getting into people's heads to get them out. I think he got a lot of wickets with ordinary balls just by fooling or destroying the batsman in the mind. Maybe that's why he was a good poker player.

He had a few wicket keepers who benefitted from his bowling , Healy & Gilchrist mainly. I remember Healy behind the stumps & his "nice one Warnie" at almost every ball 🤣
