I can't imagine them not going for it. They've got the cash to pay for it and there are lots of palms eager to be greased.

They are already preparing a bid as far as I am aware. Infantino was also sat next to Mohamed Bin Salman at the WC Final. I suspect the brown envelopes have already started to be handed out.

I've just received an email, part copied below, asking me to speak out against Ronaldo. It does seem a bit pointless
"My name is Peter and I started to support Newcastle United when I was six years old – the same club that was taken over by the Saudi Arabian public investment fund in October 2021. I asked this community to sign the open letter to footballer Cristiano Ronaldo, who has joined Saudi Arabian football club Al Nassr, asking him to speak up for those on death row in the Kingdom.

5,549 people in this community added their name. But Mohammed bin Salman’s attempts to distract the world are aided by a state owned investment fund worth hundreds of billions of pounds. The investment fund took over Newcastle United in October 2021, hosted sporting events, and created sporting tournaments. Additionally, the Government’s tourism authority appointed famous sports personalities as tourist ambassadors like Lionel Messi. This is sportswashing.

Will you sign the open letter to Cristiano Ronaldo, calling on him to speak out against the death penalty in Saudi Arabia?
It only takes 30 seconds."

I can only think the money is driving them there, but on the other hand they can never be described as lacking that particular metric already. This goes well beyond football, but does anyone notice if they get paid £10m p/a instead of £5m?

I think the numbers here are more like £170 million.

But it's not about individual salaries. It's the power that comes from having limitless cash to buy a sport. They're already well on their way to taking golf. But 'sgolf. Nobody gives a shit.

But they're creating a blueprint. This is about buying up sport. It is a real threat.

Just a single example, Ronaldo must be wealthy beyond belief. Can he need even more cash? He has bought in to it.

I kind of get the impulsion of Ronaldo, Messi, Ibrahimovic, etc to carry on playing, if they've not sussed out what they want to do for the second halves of their lives. Why Saudi, or PSG/Qatar for that matter, it can only be that only they can afford to keep them going without wanting to compromise their team, as might happen at City, Newcastle, etc.

There was a very lucrative market in the states for leading players approaching the end of their careers, not sure if this is still the case though.

Well guess what. Fuck him also .Mohammed bin Salman: 'I don't care' about 'sportswashing' accusations - 'I don't care about sportswashing'
I had my brother in law over here ,with my sister , for a week . He’s a Newcastle supporter and any crucial of the regime was met with ‘why are they picking on us ‘ . Even my position that it was perfectly possible to support the team ( and not want the owners to go ) but to be against the backward and reactionary culture of the regime was met with the same response . ☹️

"I don't understand it ( the booing )" says Southgate. Really?
It was only a matter of time before Southgate showed himself again to be the hypocritical cunt that he is. He did that when he shamefully farted out some mealy mouthed shit when doing his best to justify going to Qatar whilst at the same time declaring he and his team were against all forms off discrimination.

Also shows how corporate commitments to diversity and inclusion are little more than branding ploys.

Absolutely. Have read a fair bit on comcast who i think now own sky outright. They have committed a fuckton of money to help fight social injustice and inequality issues. I have taken a liking to them after reading what Trump thinks of them.

Speaking Saturday at the fairgrounds in the East Texas flatland town of Conroe, Trump described both publicly traded telecommunications giants as "left-wing lunatics who are destroying our nation. Also " the company is full of woke executives who should be boycotted " :D

I think it just reflects the reality of being involved in top level football these days tbh. The team and manager supporting the taking the knee thing wasn't based in some deeper left wing belief, but it was quite a natural thing I think when the team is from really varied backgrounds and all the players will have grown up playing in similar teams. It was probably stronger for that IMO but then it doesn't stretch beyond that - condemning a teammate for taking the big cash offer would need a much more outward looking view when they're all used to taking the big cash offer.

Absolutely. I doubt any of the players have come from a privileged backround and much more likely to have encountered hardship, prejudice and racism either personally or to people they know.

TNT Sports aka BT Sport describing their forthcoming PPV boxing match in Saudi as "kicking off Riyadh season"... 🤮

I wonder how much their pay was, £50,000 per fan?
But it is all about promoting and progressing football in Saudi!
