Been meaning to do this for ages - thread for sailing waffle and general boating nonsense (I know there are urbs living on canal boats / houseboats - all welcome and encouraged :))

Anyway, to kick things off, today that nutty 75 year old asthmatic pensioner with a dodgy ticker, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, finished 3rd in class after 20 days at sea in the Route Du Rhum single-handed transatlantic yacht race, the fucking crazy old loon :D:thumbs::cool:

These International Moths are fucking nuts, they fly on foils on the rudder and centreboard. Foiling technology is spreading through sailing lots now. Americas Cup catamarans, these things and soon mono hulls like Open 60 offshore race boats (like the Hugo Boss boat in post #3^^)

Here's a bit about the AC72 cats and foiling technology. It's not really sailing as such anymore - these things have a wing, a stiff hinged wing like a plane so it can generate huge 'lift' and therefore speed (and therefore actual lift from the foils) Boeing designed the wing for the USA boat, and it was that that won it, aircraft technology not boat technology. Team USA was bankrolled to $500,000,000 by Oracle

One of the best things about offshore sailing is dolphins :) Have seen it a few times, best was hundreds of miles from land crossing Biscay. Dolphin visits are always recorded in the ship's log

Team SCA (all women crew in otherwise 100% male event) in the Volvo Ocean Race:
