Saddleworth Moor fire is getting serious...

Another fire, up above Stalybridge. It looks pretty small from the photos so hopefully it will get put out soon.

LIVE updates: Fire service tackling large fire seen on the moors

I was up on Pule Hill yesterday - the grasses are super dry and yellow but you’ll still get a wet knee when you kneel in them to take a pic.

Marsden Moor, last night

We were there yesterday!!!

See those white things? They are big, ton-sized sacks of stones from demolished mills and delivered by helicopter to be used to refurb the bridleway.

This is them from Manchester Road/Pule Hill:

And this is them, looking towards Pule:

It’s so so dry here :(

It’s all gone, all the bit that is the ‘secret picnic spot’ that my stepkits think they discovered :’(

Lots of fires recently and it's only April. Lyme Park at Disley had one the other day and various ones from last year have had recent repeats.

these fires, when there is a clear link to some eejit being responsible, makes me fucking spew
having grown up near saddleworth I know how valuable these places are
being the son of an ex-firefighter - I know how dangerous all this can be

"A wander over the area devastated by the large moorland fire in 2018. The area is mostly devoid of signs of regeneration or wildlife. In the 2 hours I was there I only saw 1 grouse, 3 wheatears and a robin, this time of years you'd expect to see or hear the many moorland birds who come to nest."

It's really sad to hear that it is very slow to recover. I remember being up on the tops before the fire and there were birds everywhere, but there just isn't anywhere for them to nest anymore in the burnt areas. :(

If it doesn't regenerate I don't know how this will affect its ability to hold water, or remain intact rather than washing the peat downhill.

This is interesting - the water situation as of December 2018 (no later data appears to be available.

It’s just not raining. This Yorkshire Water report from Nov 2018 predicts drought if patterns continue, and it’s hardly rained since then, and didn’t really snow either.

This data from the Met Office shows a drier than normal winter across the whole country - Regional values - Winter 2019

Compared to the 1981-2010 average:

North of England 194mm (74% of average)
England E & NE 131.4mm (66%)
England NW & Wales N 318.4mm (84%)

Huge wild fire in western Snowdonia - east side of the A498 from Porrhmadog to Bethgelert from the valley floor and railway line up to the tops (700m?).

Smoke can be seen from Pwllehi.

Looked to be about 3 miles of burn line, all wildly alight. One fire engine...

For fucks sake - firefighters have found discarded fireworks on Marsden Moor. The fireworks may not have been connected to the fire, but it shows how idiotic some people are. Fireworks should be banned from general sale.

Unbelievably, people have been setting off FIREWORKS on the moors

The article has a good picture of how close the flames got to Uppermill in the Saddleworth Moor fire. It looks almost like a lava flow.

that looks much closer to those buildings than it really is - foreshortening I suppose

I know that row of shops and the moors are a fair bit behind them but there are other buildings, houses etc as well as the canal and the river Tame and the rail tracks behind those shops - poor sods on Den Lane and Kenworthy Gardens must be being roasted alive :(

Fireworks 'eh? Bellends. Total Bellends.

I haven't seen any of those Chinese lantern things for a while, hopefully that’s a trend that’s died off. Did some work on a military aviation fuel depot once and one of the guys working there told me they’d found one on top of one of the tanks one morning.
