RIP Martin Duffy

Another hugely sad loss. Saw Felt loads of times in Brum as a kid and first getting into gigs and indie music. Had friends who were good friends with Lawrence, Ainge, Deebank and Duffy. Had a massive Felt poster on the wall for years from the last gig at Burberries.

They were an amazing band constantly walking the line between shambles and genius. They had two unbelievably good musicians in Maurice and then Duffy. As [62] notes Forever Breathes the Lonely Word is a classic, one of the very best. I played it on the bus last night on the way home from work having heard about Duffy. Tears in my eyes.

RIP Martin Duffy

I don't really know Felt, will have to check them out. I didn't really know Duffy either but we did a tour with the Scream and he was one of the friendlier faces in that 10 days, nice bloke. A sad loss, they're a very tight knit crew so will be devastated.

RIP Duffy.

Not defending Gillespie but there is clearly a much more complex story there. I dealt with an alcoholic father for 20 years. At various points I stopped giving him money, cut him out for months at a time, gave him everything; gave him nothing - ultimately none of it helped.

I'm probably just projecting but when I read that statement, a lot of it felt familiar - particularly the blaming of everyone else.

True, but there is a big difference between not paying someone to stop them killing themselves with drink and not paying someone at all for a 30 year career where he was instrumental in creating their sound.

I don't think it's a coincidence they fucked over Denise Johnson the same way, or that Throb ended up penniless and seeing my mate at Addaction shortly before he died - penniless.

Gillespie otoh has never gone short of designer clothes and is proud his wedding suit came from Alexander McQueen. Clothes are virtually all he talks about* in his shit autobiography.

*hyperbole. But they are a constant theme in the book.

looks like Mr G despite his vocal support for strikers had a very Tory attitude to his own 'employees'.

He lived/lives in Highgate. Not a cheap place to own a house.

Precisely this. Dressing up their actions and lack of support as helping Martin Duffy deal with his addiciton is both disgraceful and disingenuous. Cut out of songwriting royalties, paid as a session musician and denied help in keeping a roof over his head are the actions of a pair of cunts and not concerned friends.

Reading Duffy's son's account was utterly heartbreaking.

Gillespie always has been a poseur and a parasite who leached off other people's talent and played the press game to get ahead, despite all his bullshit 'principles'. I'm really disappointed some folk didn't realise this much earlier.

Landed here by being made aware from the Oasis thread. RIP I loved Primal Scream and the Charlatans. A huge talent lost.

I assume Lawrence is the one from the documentary Lawrence of Belgravia? Great documentary. Proper unrecognised genius.

There’s always been a piss take in the music industry where writers get all the royalties and some musicians who contributed to the writing aren’t recognised as such and just paid a wage. Which it seems is what has happened here.

I lived with bassist from The Wannadies for a bit way back when. When they weren’t touring he was eking out a living in a Deli while Par and Kristina had a nice flat in Hampstead. Although he appeared to accept this.

I’ve long known that. What I hadn’t fully grasped was that he’s also a hypocrite (kids at private school…) and the type of scum who even rips off/cuts off his supposed comrade and ‘the most talented one of us’.
