I wasn't aware of his involvement in politics, or his health problems that lead to him being disabled, but I had heard about him and his work regarding human evolution in Africa

I haven't kept up with what he was doing recently, but his work in anthropology back in the day was very important to our understanding of hominid/human evolution.

BBC News did a piece about him last night, including excerpts from a HardTalk interview.

In 1993 he was in a plane crash that resulted in him losing his legs.

I didn’t know he was still alive. I’ve read a few of his books and remember his TV programmes. His finds increased our knowledge of human origins, although many of his interpretations have fallen out of fashion. But that’s how science works. RIP Richard.
