Referencing 2nd hand references in essays?

How should references made in , say, lecture notes be referenced in essays?

I want to use a couple of references that are contained a lecture hand out in an essay. It's only a very short essay for a night class so I have no intention, and there is no expectation, of obtaining and reading the original source.

In the old days I'd just look up the book's details and shove it in as if I had read it.

But that will be clearly not true in this case. And I would quite like to reference this properly.

They're not direct quotes though, just references to research.

Actually, not to worry, a quick scan through the lecture notes that I'm using reveals no references that I'll use anyway .

Oh well.
