Recommend me some drone

Blagsta

Minimum cage, maximum cage
I have Coil - Time Machines and Nurse With Wound - Soliloquy for Lilith.

Give me more.

How To Destroy Angles is also a good Coil drone piece.

Some stuff on the Jester label... although perhaps more power electronics/aggro noise/electronic metal/weird noise territory than 'drone' (whatever that is), but the genre is pretty vague, anyway...

Pandit Pran Nath- indian drone, vocal ragas...

Earth- Earth 2 is supposedly good, but to me it just sounds like one riff, stretched to eternity and not even any chord changes- Just that one riff for an hour or so... Its just not very fun to listen to if you're sober

Pan Sonic's Mika Vainio(sp?) did make some pretty drone-y solo albums, IIRC.

John Cale/Tony Conrad: Early solo pieces, 60's experimental drone

Location recordings of insects or reptiles- Drone galore, if you crank up the volume...

Keiji Haino/Merzbow: Critically acclaimed, if slightly boring/directionless japanese noise drone

Dead C: psychedelic new zealand noise rock drone.

I have How to Destroy Angels already, but I'll look out for some of those others.

Cheers.

You're welcome- I have tons of other records in this vein, but my stuff is still in boxes after moving house so I'll have to kick my memory to recall any other titles (and releases of this type have often ridiculously over-complicated, ultraobscure names aswell)

Aah, lest we forget: Henry Flynt, king of the organic drone violin...
His stuff is just re-released, too.

Boris is better than Sunn on record, IMO- Sunn is best heard live.

you should get the sunn O))) / boris album (altar). it's fucking AMAZING.

seconded.

rosy parlane - 'jessamine' cd is superb.

growing, esp 'his return', 'the sky's run into the sea' and a split cd they did with mark evan burden. the burden track is boring imo, but the growing one is very powerful, really portentous. (growing's non-drone stuff can be really beautiful but very stop-start, which i can find wearying at times.)

boris - flood.

white/light (due to the name it would probably help to search with the record label details - rebis records). sunn O))) meets kraut rock with some power electronics style stuff, but with a spiritual slant.

white lichens - white/light collaboration with lichens, very atmospheric, blazing guitars/fx, inspired by spirits of the goetia. (lichens well worth checking btw but not always that droney, just deeply mystical. their 'omns' cd contains some of the eeriest music i've ever heard.)

organum - amen (actually loads of their stuff is excellent but tends to be out of print and collectible and therefore dear. also very obscure so i don't know how often it turns up on slsk etc.)

phill niblock, esp the triple cd on touch called 'touch three'.

rst - axes. isolated, crystalline guitar-based drone.

hth

oh yeah, i've got 3 really ace CDs by andrew chalk. quite dreamy, far-away, really draws you in. you can hear the influence of organum here and there (as with the rosy parlane). really beautiful packaging too, all handprinted heavy card sleeves etc.

Thanks for the tips - I typed "andrew chalk" into live365 and got loads of hits.

Including "Ferngerms Sleeps" which gets me off to sleep most nights.

I'm currently listening to Sunn O))) - Black One and it's a little...errr...pompous.

Similar to Sunn O))) but with no capes and twatting about are Earth - amazing sludgy drone-riff stuff. Later stuff is a bit less intense, but still good.

Obviously lots have people have mentioned Sunn0))) etc. but check out a few of the other bands on Southern Lord, there's a page where you can listen to stuff on their website or get this month's Plan B which came with a free Southern Lord sampler CD.

kind of like noise psychedelic shoegazer ambient drone, so there is a bit more going on than some of these acts. also some Jackie O Motherfucker, i really like the Flags Of The Sacred Harp album, again it isn't just drone it is a bit more complex.

Robedoor
Pocahaunted
Wereju
Bones of Seabirds
Culver (Lee Stokoe from Marzuraan)
Aidan Baker (of Nadja)
Peter Wright
Daniel Menche
the mighty fucking Skullflower also Hototogisu, Sunroof and Total, all Matthew Bower projects
mystified
Troum
Taiga Remains
Emeralds
Eye Shaking Kingdom (comprising of Nackt Insecten and Alistair Crosbie... all worth checking out)

I could go on and on and on....much like most of these artists do

Bianchi is a fucking legend, done some amazing stuff, some a lot gentler and accessible than Symphony... though that is an awesome piece

At War With false Noise has a 25th anniversary reissue of MAURIZIO BIANCHI - "The Plain Truth" coming out soon

get it...and support this cracking label!
