Almost there... again.

Any thoughts on this model please? My only concern is the memory, but as stated, my only needs are online browsing and picture editing.

Thanks for all the advice so far. :)

You can always upgrade the RAM, 2GB of compatible memory costs about £50 from anywhere other than apple. Looks fine otherwise (small screen though)

That's a good price - but I'd agree with bob, get new memory afterwards (1GB should do - should be around £30). It's a piece of piss to install.
Screen is more than enough for your needs, IMO :)

Christ is this thread still rollin along!

Thats a great price, snap it up..

OK - the dirty deed has been done! Love the way the OP said 'I just 'aint a Mac sort of guy...' to this.

£542 all in, even managed to blag £10 discount on iWorks over the phone ;)

£30 upgrade of 1gig memory coming from overclockers as well.

Many thanks for all the advice and input. I'll let you know how I get along with it.

nothing against macs as think they are nice bits of kit, but am i the only home user who hasnt a virus in the last six years?

btw my mate has just gone over to mac and wants to know if anyone can help finding an eqiverlent to memory map?

All going rather well :)

But about the 512MB memory...

Yep, I'm gonna upgrade to 1G, possibly 2. The Mac guide that came with the machine reckons that I need two memory modules, e.g. two 512's to make it 1G as it's a DDR2.

Do I really need to buy two? Or just one 1G?

Cheers

To be fair, buying a pair of 1g memory from Crucial or the like is often not much more expensive than buying 1g. Go for it if you can afford it.

And if you're recycling your old memory...

;)

It's not because it's DDR2. All motherboards are designed to run RAM in pairs. It's something called Dual Channel. In the good old days of A64 chips that didn't really matter, but for Netburst chips it was a problem, i think that was due to the off chip memory controller.

It will result in a performance hit if you run differently sized modules, it's even possible that getting two modules the same size will not run in dual channel mode. It's a bit picky so the general practice is to buy two at the same time in a set.

RAM is dirt cheap, your choice.

two 1Gig UN-buffered at £57.

Shit me. Think I'll get me some of that.

Shop elsewhere though. Overclockers uk is run by some shady racist types, allegedly.

In the real world the benefits of running dual channel memory are negligible. Most modern CPU's are rarely starved of memory bandwidth.

Same price on Crucial by the way, who've always been good to me.

I know that was true for the A64, less true of the P4 but i haven't seen stats on C2D CPUs.

I think this thread is thankfully drawing towards a close...

iMac is wonderful, 2Gig of memory has been successfully installed  (although it was a right bugger getting the Phillips screws off the back of the machine.)

Anyway - as a thank you to all the kind help I have received here in getting sorted out with a new PC, um, Mac ;) , I now have two 256 DDR2 Mac memory thingies to give away.

First come, first served with a PM should do the trick. I'm happy to post anywhere in the UK, or a Brixton meet up.

Many thanks again :)
