Reccomend me a streaming/add-on service....

kebabking

Not a Girly Swot, but I like them....
lockdown help needed...

we've, uptil now, not watched a great deal of tv, but we're now all at home and are likely to be so for the next 6 months - and we've very quickly come to the view that freeview is pretty crap.

two kids - 5 and 9 - mostly they watch Cbeebies and CBBC, and we like films, BBC4, documentaries, nature stuff, history. we've never watched ITVbe...

broadband is around 5Mb, cost isn't a particular issue, our our tv is relatively old (10 years?) and it doesn't have any USB connection, just HDMI and the old ariel sockets.

views? opinions? do i need to get to argos and buy a new tv?

cheers.

I have consulted my daughter.

Netflix - best
Amazon - worst
We also have Disney now, but that's quite new.

You may need to get an adaptor to plug a USB into the HDMI slot.

This may be the time to get a Smart TV.

hth.

You can add a box and choose what you want to pay for. Probably most content on Netflix although Amazon has the advantage of free Prime delivery if that's worth anything to you.

Cheapest and easiest option would be an Amazon Fire Stick, which would also run Netflix and the other series you've mentioned.

Netflix is by far the best, I don’t really watch regular telly anymore since I have it (though I live in Germany, where regular telly is crap anyway). It takes a little research as to what is worth watching on there. I have the Amazon Prime streaming service more as an addition to my ordering account but there are some good things on there too. Not going to splash out on any more streaming services, for the rest there is torrenting.

Broadband is 5mb? I'm on ADSL, (not fibre) and get much more than that. You're going to struggle if you're all watching different shows.

But can't go wrong with Netflix, dip in and out. Prime I find a bit barron of stuff I actually want to watch. Have kept for the delivery side of things at present.

The new Disney channel p'raps. (If you / they like Star Wars.)

Curzon cinema looks worth a look

BFI also

I think I get about 15mB, from last time I looked. No drop outs, I cba doing the maths but you might be alright. Not sure if Netflix steps down to lower res if latency becomes an issue, I imagine there's some sort of stream adjustment dependant on network conditions.

Actually the speed is a fair point. 5mbs should be enough, provided it's consistent. When I was out in the sticks though it would drop in speed all the time, so I didn't bother streaming and just torrented everything.

Maybe have a test of one of the services on your PC before buying a new device?

i've done a speed test with a couple of different online tests, its wobbling between 4.9 and 5.4...

It might be worth asking your broadband provider if the speed can just be increased without any major works. I know for a long time my parents were on an unnecessarily slow plan through simply having done nothing.
