Ray Gravell dead

He always came across as such a throuroughly decent person.

Great ambassador for Sport and Wales - many of today's sports "stars" could learn a thing or two from him.

gutted also, my post from the sports forum

really quite upset about this when i turned on the news this morning :(

I grew up in Llanelli so he was always around, always smiling, always laughing and booming with his great voice.

So much pride in him and the way he dealt with his illness :)

and that's without the rugby side... i remember going from school to Strade Park to see the Scarlets v All Blacks, what a day that was

and not forgetting his work with the eisteddfod and becoming a bard.

gobeithio bod heddwch Ray
hope there is peace Ray

I know little of the guys accomplishments, or anything about him at all really, yet with the occasional glimpse of him on tv he did manage to come across as one of the most genuinely nice blokes you could ever come across, its very sad.
He was an archetypal passionate Welshman, a great bloke. RIP

Really upsetting news, I thought the BBC's tribute was very nice just recapping some of his contributions to sport and to Wales. I remember in the rugby world cup programming he talked about the pride he had in playing rugby for Wales. I don't really follow rugby but I could identify with what he said, and could never match his passion for what he believed in.

Mr fit knew him, they shared a press room at matches.
He described him as a bundle of enthiasm and energy, a truly nice bloke who would chat to anyone.
:(

:( :( :( only met him the once but there was something totally special - kind and good - about him .. very very sad for llanelli wales and everyone ...

as a kid remember him as this enormous scary red bearded giant doing those crash balls in the centre when all i wanted was for jj or gerald d to get the ball! :)

Gorffwysed Mewn hedd :)

My mam was in bits about this the other day. She said he was a really lovely man. Too young to go.....
I didn't know loads about him but like others get the impression he was just that from the telly and other people's accounts of him.

RIP Ray.

It's been lovely the way that Ray's life has been celebrated in Wales. A wonderful man who was obviously a force of nature which is why everyone that met him loved and remembered him.
The film of Wales in the 70's with Windsor, Price, Faulkner, Wheel, Martin, Squire, Cobner, Price, Edwards, Bennett, Gravell, Fenwick, JJ, Gerald, JPR and Quinell Snr make me want to weep.
There's none of the guilt that existed about the death of John Charles who was a similar personality but was neglected after his retirement.
Safe travel Ray.

Gerald Davies, who was also a Welsh international and Lion, told the service his friend never accepted how good he really was.

"He became a man who could inspire and did inspire without him realising the enormity of what he was doing," he said.
