In the
new interview with New York Magazine, he discussed his first impressions of the Beatles in unsparing terms. âThey were the worst musicians in the world,â he told interviewer David Marchese. âThey were no-playing motherfuckers. Paul [McCartney] was the worst bass player I ever heard.â
Drummer Ringo Starr came in for particular opprobrium: âAnd Ringo? Donât even talk about it.â
Jones recalled arranging Love Is a Many Splendoured Thing for Starrâs 1970 debut solo album Sentimental Journey.
âRingo had taken three hours for a four-bar thing he was trying to fix on a song. He couldnât get it. We said: âMate, why donât you get some lager and lime, some shepherdâs pie, and take an hour-and-a-half and relax a little bit.ââ
In the interim, Jones called English jazz drummer Ronnie Verrell into the studio.
âRonnie came in for 15 minutes and tore it up. Ringo comes back and says: âGeorge [Martin], can you play it back for me one more time?â
âSo George did, and Ringo says: âThat didnât sound so bad.â And I said: âYeah, motherfucker because it ainât you.â Great guy, though.â
