Question about returning items

Geri

wasn't born to follow
Does anyone know how strict shops are (or House of Fraser in particular) about returning stuff if 28 days have passed? Suppose I wanted to return something and it was 30 days since I purchased it, do you think they would refuse?

You may end up with a credit note.

If you have a receipt and it was paid for on a card, they usually like to refund the money back to that card, not pay out cash.

What have you bought and changed your mind about?!

Oh yeah.. it being Christmas and everything, they may be a bit more flexible. I know some stores take the 28 days (or 14 or whatever) from Christmas Day to allow for the fact items may be given as presents.

I haven't changed my mind about anything, it's just that if I see the thing in the sales I might buy it again and take the full priced one back.

I did buy it on their storecard, so that might sway them, I suppose.

It sometimes depends on the person who serves you - it's worth a shot. I reckon if you had reasonable proof of purchase, they'd probably let you get away with it.

Sometimes, if left longer and the item is now reduced, they only refund the current price.

I wondered about that. They possibly started doing that to avoid exactly what Geri is trying to do ;)

Hmmmmm. Today is the 28th day, if it's reduced in the sales I will have to buy it, take the sale price off the tag and take it back later with the old receipt! Might be tricky if the same shop assistant is on the till. :D

i'm sure they'll be fine. no matter what a shop states in it's terms, by law you can take anything back within 3 months. check the dept of trading guidelines on gov.co.uk.

if you've any worries just print a copy out and take along with you.

tho usually the 'bigger' shops are the more amenable , as they KNOW the law.

:)

No need to return it anyway, as it wasn't reduced.

I thought shops had no legal obligation to give you a refund anyway, unless the item is faulty?

They're not. Those that do refund do so for good customer relations. Some will only exchange after 14/28 days, not refund.

I don't really think people should be able to exchange things just because they've changed their minds.

And they certainly shouldn't do it because that item has subsequently been reduced in the sales and they want to get some money back!

I like to think I've got a fair amount of bare-faced cheek, but I've got none compared to you! :p
