"Protected strike action"?

Overspeed

New Member
Hello

I am trying to stop my head exploding with conflicting information regarding "protected action"

My firm is going on strike next week, I am a member of ASLEF, who are not on strike.
The RMT have balloted their members and are holding a legal 24hr strike.

I cannot even contemplate crossing the picket line, it just isn't going to happen.

As an ASLEF member, am I protected against dismissal, or is this only the case if I am not in any union?

Would it be a good idea to join the RMT as well?

According to ASLEF, I am protected, but the more I talk to people and the more I read on the net(!) the more I am beginning to wonder.

Thank you for any advice

I'd keep talking to ASLEF and your local colleagues. Unless you're the only ASLEF member on your company / your depot, I suspect you're not going to be alone, and there's quite a lot of recent history of this with a certain train company operating to the south of London.

I'm not sure many people join both unions for situations like this.
