The nominees for the Golden Ball have been announced.

So who do you think has been the best player of the tournament?

Diego Forlan (Uruguay)
Architect of the team’s attack, very influential, great impact for his team, provider of quality final passes, goal scorer, set pieces/shots from long range

Asamoah Gyan (Ghana)
Huge work rate, efficient, good dribbler, creates problems to each defence, good goal scorer

Andres Iniesta (Spain)
Very fine ball-playing attacking midfielder, a star for the team, impressive dribbling ability

Lionel Messi (Argentina)
Outstanding in his pace and creativity for his team, dribbling, shooting, passing – spectacular and efficient

Mesut Oezil (Germany)
A real talent for the present and the future, quick feet and great vision, good final and decisive passes

Arjen Robben (Netherlands)
Very good pace and dribbling skills, wonderful ability to cut inside from the right, effective to his team

Bastian Schweinsteiger (Germany)
Impressive by his first pass (forward and accurate), very good passer, has moments of individual brilliance, ball-winner

Wesley Sneijder (Netherlands)
A maestro in midfield, exceptional work rate, the engine of Netherland’s attacks, excellent passer and scorer

David Villa (Spain)
Top scorer; quick, two footed, very good on one-on-one situations, provides good final passes, excellent finisher

Xavi (Spain)
The metronome and the engine of the Spanish team, very influential in the passing style of the game, one of the finest midfielders in the tournament

FIFA will obviously be hoping that the winner doesn't get himself sent off in disgrace in the final this time!

A little video here too.

oezil or wesley sneijder for me, with schweinsteiger in third.

Unless villa does something special in the final.

Schweinsteiger for me, although note the scandalous attacker-bias in the nominees, as usual for these awards. Philipp Lahm should certainnly be in there.

I don't think it is that scandalous that those who attack and score goals are generally more lauded than those who try to stop someone from scoring.

Cannavaro came second last time round, so it is not always biased towards attacking players.

The only defender who's ever won it though was Jose Nasazzi, captain of the 1930 Uruguay team, with Oliver Kahn in 2002 the only other anomoly. Likewise, the only Ballon d'Or winners of my lifetime not to be attackers are Cannavaro and Sammer.

Van Bommel. Truly artful hatchetman, combining 70's Leeds style truculence with Italian guile.

yes, I think it's fair to say that the ability to score goals is the most prized talent for a footballer, the highest transfer fees don't go to defenders.

Gyan, took a lot of bottle after missing the goal which would have put them in the semi-finals, to step up a few minutes later and slot away the first of the penalty shoot-out. He always look dangerous, quick and strong, would do well in the premiership, but we need to stop the foreigns coming over, so hopefully he'll stay where he is

Disappointed Muller is not in there; overall deserves a nom above Ozil who was quiet in the Arg and Spain games. If he gets a brace tonight he could be top scorer.

this. also surprised muller isn't there.

I see he;s in the shortlist of one I mean three for the young player award.

too close to call. My heart says Schweinsteiger but it depends if any of the nominees in the final has an outstanding game. If not I'd say Forlan for leading a team that got into the tournament through a very unconvincing play-off.

Forlan for me. An outstanding 5 goal tourney to get Uraquay further than they've ever gone before :)

Premiership again?

Mesut Ozil . He's come a long way baby.

Glad Forlan won this. Not only did he score more spectacular goals, he also scored vital ones as well. Plus playing in a team that was never expected to get that far.

re Forlan technically it's not further than they have ever gone before.

So will my Hill's bet on Forlan to be top goalscorer pay out? I hope they don't pull a fast one and say he didn't win the Golden Boot, as I will then have trump them with his Golden Ball.

Will it be a quarter of the odds (ie 12.5/1) or less, or more?

He was fucking brilliant
