Parking a 6m long van in Bridgwater?

Riff

B@nned from eGofestivals
Afternoon.

I'm travelling to Somerset at the end of June as I'm working at Glastonbury Festival. I'm getting the train to Bristol Temple Meads (4.5 hours) but getting to Pilton from there is proving tricky.

I've been offered a lift in a friend's van. They live in Glastonbury itself (NB they're not going to the festival in Pilton), BUT the proviso is I have to spend 1.5 hours getting a bus to Glastonbury Town first. I don't really fancy spending another 90 minutes on a bus getting there (IF it runs on time - we are talking about Firstbus after all). I'm very grateful for the offer, but trying to "meet them halfway" and find an easier/quicker way to pick me up

I'm trying to persuade a them to collect me in Bridgwater (or even Burnham at a push) as that is a shitload easier and quicker to get to from Temple Meads and not that far from Glastonbury itself. I'm more than prepared to cover fuel costs.

They are hand-wringing about driving the van there as it's just over 6m long and has a poor turning circle meaning they can’t get into many car parks but the main problem is the height, 2.6m,

Does anyone know anywhere near Bridgwater station where they could park up?

Loads of Bridgwater streets have unrestricted parking, or it did when I was going there regularly last year.

Parkway is long, straight and has no restrictions. Whether you'd want to leave a van there is another matter.

Ah they wouldn't be leaving the van unattended. I'd be getting off the train and hopping straight in. How long does it take to walk there from the train station? And could a 6m van manoeuvre along there easily?

I get that you don't want to spend 90 minutes on a bus but a return trip from Glastonbury to Bridgwater is 90 minutes for your friend.

I'm going to sell "Parking a 6m long van in Bridgwater" as a column title to Adrian Chiles.

Trouble is, the title would be longer than the column.

In case anyone doesn't know, his tedious 100 words are there due 100% to nepotism. His partner is editor-in-chief of the Guardian.

Can they use the drop off bay at the station? As you say they just need to stop long enough for you to get into the van.

It is long enough I think IMG_0939.png

You would also achieve an informal anarchist action for the day :)

Yes, that's why I'm trying to negotiate something that's agreeable all-round. :(

Taunton stations access has been redone and should be pretty easy to access with a van I reckon and there's space outside for a pick up. Parking is a bloody multi storey though.
The bus ride isn't too bad either. I did it one year when pretending to be local to get in for the Sunday.

When do you need to be in Pilton for and can you get to Castle Cary, or maybe Frome, by train ? Not making promises at the moment but if you're not trying to get into the festival on Busy day I could give you a lift.

I'm travelling Sunday 23rd and my train gets into Temple Meads at 15.30. Not many trains running to Frome or Castle Cary on that day, but quite a few running on theBath/Westbury line.

Which day is busy day?

Busy day is the day the car parks open for attendees, think it's been Tuesday in previous years. I'll look it up, and look at trains on that Sunday.

Get the train to Castle Cary and get them to collect you there.

Do you go through Bath on you way? Might be worth just getting off there and skip Temple Meads.

Sounds harsh but I'd probably just fuck your friends off and blag a direct lift to the festival with someone working from Bristol instead. Sounds like a gigantic faff and hassle otherwise.

Actually, I have sacked them off as they said it's get a bus to Glastonbury Town or it's nothing. I am willing to be flexible and get a train to an easy pick up point closer to where they live, they are not.

Even getting to Castle Cary is a faff as I have to change at Temple Meads to get a train out to Westbury then get off at Westbury to wait around and then get another train down to Castle Cary. Plenty of trains run to Westbury on a Sunday, but not so many to Castle Cary. Apparently there have been pre-festival crew shuttle buses running from Castle Cary in years past, but I can't find out whether they are running this year, or when.

Anyhoo, looks like I've got a lift from Westbury from someone else on Urban :)
