Oyster refund

A few weeks ago I bought an Oyster for a friend who it turned out already had one.

Today I tried to get a refund at the ticket office and was told I'd need to provide my passport or driving licence and two proofs of address (which I don't usually carry) to get my money back, is this a new thing or are you not allowed unregistered cards anymore.

Could be that it's to stop thieves nicking oysters and then turning them in for cash. But they could achieve the same thing by insisting on crediting the money to your bank account - especially as quite a lot of people have neither a driving licence nor a passport.

Pretty poor rate of return for a lot of risk I'd have thought? The average Oyster card has what on it? £10? And as they're all serial numbered and could have been reported as stolen I wouldn't want to take that risk.

You're right. I was thinking how shops log when you return goods which I thought was an anti-scam thing.
Unregistered oysters can carry up to 90 quid but I doubt many do. There's also the risk that the card is registered and you get arrested by BTP since this transaction would have to take place in a station.

I guess I'll have to ask for a cheque, I have just received a check from then I have been waiting for since July

Hopefully it doesn't take so long this time
