Osama bin Laden killed by US forces in Pakistan

Given that the killing of Bin Laden will prove a field day for conspiracy theorists, the US seems to be doing its utmost to persuade people that the al-Qaida leader really is dead.

That man will if he has to order his troops to put down protesting Bahrainis , Emiratis , Saudis or anyone else who threatens US interests in any way shape or form . The US have to get out of there eventually and this mans alleged death means they can do so with some dignity .

He does preside over a mass-murdering empire, yes, but not all emperors are the same, even if they represent fundamentally the same interests. And not all the interests Obama represents are keen on the current scale of US militarism, either. There isn't just one force pulling him in one direction on this.

But even if you are right in your judgement of Obama – and you may well be – even if this is merely a face-saving manoeuvre designed to allow the US to get out of Afghanistan, it is still to be welcomed.

But I don't completely discount the possibility of change. The US has seen its previous tactic of arm-the-friendly-dictator falling down. It has also seen the example of China and the way it is engaging with the rest of the world. Perhaps the US wants to emulate China more in the future. It makes sense, so why wouldn't their leaders see that? It's not impossible.
 
Someone will make a mint selling those souvenir sick bags for the big 3 events. It's got to be the worst bank holiday weekend in years. You've had the royal wedding, the dead Popes party and now Osama bin dunnin. Poor old May day got squeezed out of the news.
 
I just spent some time reading Islamic/Muslim forums, some interesting stuff.

One guy who claims to live in Abbottabad, Pakistan says there is no way on gods earth bin Laden could have been living so close to Pakistan's biggest military academy without the knowledge of the Pakistani inelegance services. It is, and had been for years seen as a potential terrorists target. They also claim that any (new) building of that size in the area would have drawn lots of interest.

Anyone know this part of Pakistan, is it true that the area around the military academy is as well policed as is being claimed?

There are also some posts from people who claim to have spoken to members of their family who are members of the Taliban and they are saying this is bullshit and he is alive and well.

Iv'e been there. It's a medium sized town. Absolutely beautiful place fwiw.I don't recall any more military or security there than anywhere else but as a tourist these things can pass you by unless you are looking. I certainly wouldn't have considered it a likely place for the worlds most wanted man to hide. Pakistan is full of wild tribal towns where he could find sympathetic locals and where the reach of the army and the state is stretched. I would have guessed he would be holed up in one of those

I have just spent an hour chatting online to two Pakistani friends in Punjab and they both dismiss the story as bullshit. The US is storing up a lot of trouble by playing things like this. If he is dead they had better prove it. The thing is conspiracy theories aren't harmless they arise from and further reinforce a distrust of the West and especially the USA and play straight into the hands of the Taliban and Islamist groups by creating an opening for their propaganda.

One other thing about this. He was holed up in the middle of a garrison town. A town by no means isolated in any way. In a million pound mansion. One of the biggest in town. Surrounded by walls and barbed wire. Inside that Villa, he was armed to the teeth. Reports are of rocket launchers fired at the helicopter and a 40 minute firefight. So inside this Villa he had enough arms to engage special forces and a helicopter.


And the Pakistani military didn't know ? Like fuck.

Jesus H Corbett - dull, slanted history lesson with ludicrious inaccuracies (America had an empire in the 17th Century?), coded anti-Semitism and then a nice dose of 9/11 Troofism - you know, yer man has got a lot of sand in his vagina, hasn't he? But will it be taken as "fact" in certain sections of Pakistan? Allmost certainly. Not exactly condusive to US/Pakistan relations, that's for sure.
 
All thats happened is the geriatric Mubarak has been replaced by a group of his mates . Dictators used to drop like flies in the 70s too , no big deal . Dont forget it was Bush and Condoleeza Rice who unveiled the vision of a middle east run along western lines as opposed to strong arm ganagsters , not Obama .
Whether Bush or Obama they persue the policy of carrot and stick . Bushes demanour was simply more hostile and dislikable than Obamas or Clintons . Had 9/11 happened on their watch the response would have been the very same . The Democrats supported most of Bushes militarist policies .American military posturing and offensiveness was sharply ratcheted up under the Clinton regime too . It was Madeline Albright and Hilary Clinton who were just as warmongering as Perle and Rice under the guise of old fashioned liberalism as opposed to neo liberalism . No different to Tony Blair .
Afghanistan is a pointless venture - particularly when one considers Pakistans role - a bottomless pit and the potential for another Vietnam type humiliation . Thats obvious by this stage . They have to leave , simple as that . The only issue is when . This Bin Laden stunt may well have determined the when .

Watching the crap coming out of the"Terror adviser from the White House" on the BBC, he skims the true story about dumping the body into the sea... be honest you don't want a shrine build in his honour so you dumped him into the sea... (Sorry buried) within 24 hours.. and "allegedly" spoke to people who "know about stuff" that it was o.k. to dump him into the sea... :D

It's fucking appalling, he's so obviously making shit up, winging it, spouting the party line etc (when his nerves allow) but it's a totally unconvincing performance so far
