Online backgammon sites? Anyone play?

🇪🇸 my spirit is crying for leaving
I’ve not played for years but used to love a game or two. I’ve recently downloaded a game but it’s not that much fun against the computer.

So, per the title.

I used to play this with housemates when I was a student, but can't remember the rules now. My brain can't manage rules for games for some reason - it just refuses to remember them.

ETA - have downloaded a version on Windows so will see if I can remember how it works. Also downloaded a new jigsaw game - it'll be much easier on the laptop than the one I've got on my phone.

Haven't played for years but remember the rules, if you want to give it ago at some stage in the next few days and your downloaded version allows you to nominate opponents.

occasionally play on www.247backgammon.org (if you mean the sort where you play against the computer) - taught myself to play out of curiosity a year or so back.

not tried online against a real person, if you see what i mean

I used to play on fibs.com for years. Initially using telnet with an ascii board (!) and then using an emulator.

It was by far the best backgammon site on the web with top class champion players through enthusiastic amateurs to total beginners. And some bots.

I think it’s still out there, but I don’t know how to log in to it.

Happily play something with simple rules like scrabble

meh to scrabble

i either get disqualified for using rude words

or get pissed off when someone knows the 2 letter words with J, Q or X in them...

Yeah, some people get stupidly competitive - and rude words should always be allowed as they're in the dictionary.

Oddly, me and mrs mx had a couple of games tonight,

we are not actually sure we have the rules right, and gave up at 1-1, which seemed fair. we don't do the doubling up dice thing, and don't gamble, cos there's little point when it's all our money.

I once had a client who was a very succesful professional Backgammon player. At least that was what he told us, Thank fuck for proper KYC these days,

Scrabble works better.

I've been playing loads of backgammon last couple of months....used to play in my 20s against a Turkish friend, but haven't in years

Its been a fascinating rabbit hole to fall down...basically modern backgammon has changed a lot becasue of computers which are capable of giving percent scores on match winning potential of any move. This has changed the culture of to a much more aggressive, blitzing style of play.

There are very well recorded world championship games on youtube which are pretty fascinating.
When watching I like to pause and think what would I do and then see what they do.

So in order to improve your game I really recommend downloading the freeware GNU Backgammon
...and setting it on tutor mode.
After each move it can show you how good your move was, and ranks all possible moves.
That doesn't mean you have to go with its top recommendation and I sometimes disagree with it for particular reasons - sometimes taking a risk is not worth it at that particular moment whatever the odds it says - but it has improved my game no end.

To play against people my favourite mobile app is Backgammon Legends. Only problem with this is it trys to coax you into buying coins and other crap. I recommend paying for the app so you dont get adverts and then ignoring the in game purchasing which come up when you open the app.

Also online apps you ahve to play fairly fast and I like to think sometimes...there is time to think but its a culture of quick play on there

Overall I prefer playing against GNU AI computer which plays at the best level it is possible to - you can still win against it as its backgammon!

Backgammon Galaxy is where the pros play, but I would leave that alone tbh

I love backgammon. Was taught by a friend in my mid-teens on an interminable 'Magic Bus' ride from London to Athens in the mid-80s. Been playing for 40 odd years and had my arse kicked all over the world. You think you know what you're doing then sit down on one of the backstreet tables in Cairo; if they'll even let you sit down - I got introduced by an Egyptian friend. It was a bit of an eye opener. Also been roundly thrashed by Bedouin children on the Red Sea coast, hammered by Moroccan teens at Malaga airport and double sixed by an octogenarian half blind Algerian in a Paris café.

I'm not a bad player but people who've been playing since they could roll dice are something else.

one problem with english language backgammon is all the terminology is shit: bar, prime, dance, blot, ace, anchor, pip etc - horrible words -needs more poetry - i bet it all sounds much better in every other arabic language

oh its kind of obvious but when using a phone/computer first click moves the highest dice number second click the lower one

When I played backgammon against people, it was usually against a load of mathematicians (I was living in Cambridge at the time and we met weekly) which meant they (mostly) thrashed me because my brain is not wired properly to work out odds and probability and whatnot, but it fascinated me, listening to them exploring those odds and probabilities with each other.

We played for money

I have also played in tournaments back in the day - BIBA - British Isles Backgammon Association - which was fun, because I met lots of different people.

I rarely play these days, although I did teach my grandchildren the basic rules, and I occasionally play against a computer on my phone. I don't know how much I would remember, if I was playing against someone who could play.

After randomly booking a three week holiday to Egypt in between the first and second lockdowns, I tried to buy a backgammon set while I was there.

There was one shop that had some sets in the window, so I went in, saw a couple of sets, asked if he had any more. He asked where my husband was.

I explained I was quite capable of buying a backgammon set for myself without a husband. And walked out because I didn't want to give any of my money such a sexist prick.

I used to play with a bf years ago, fancied playing again. I can't remember the finer points of the rules, but I downloaded a game onto my phone and just play against the bot.

He was probably trying to find out if you were single :D

Of sorts; a previous partner taught me to play Acey Deucy [?sp] where the game is played in reverse (amd with slightly different rules to moves), i.e.you start off with all tokens off the board. Use to love that but couldn’t get in with the classic Backgammon.
