Obama wins the Nobel Peace Prize

Still, after kissinger they might as well hand out nobel peace prizes free with Frosties

They did, I've got two, and physics one for my repeated efforts in proving gravity exists though the means of falling over drunk. Although I tell everyone I invented it. Gravity, that is, not falling over drunk, any drunk can do that.

what's 'relatively peaceful'??? you either are peaceful or you are not. there is no such thing as relative peace...

I dunno, in this day and age relative peace probably the best you can hope for. Not actually being able the hear the shots being fired, your only contribution to the war effort being your wages and welfare programs, the odd scuffle in the SU when Giles says our boys are brave and should be applauded and you disagree and so it's outside for fisticuff where Giles kicks you in the nuts before you start and everyone laughs.

It's rumoured that next year's Nobel Prize for Chemistry will be awarded to Richard Reid for attempting to destroy a commercial aircraft in-flight by detonating explosives hidden in his shoes.

fair enough, but Obama still leads and represents an empire at war, a superpower trying to reshuffle the world order to its advantage without giving a fuck about basic human rights. the idea behind modern america is expansion, neo-imperialism, and securing markets and resources for its own good and its own future. obama agreed to represent and lead america when he was sworn in and is no revolutionary who cares about the well-being of everybody on this planet. he was and is aware of modern day economies and the need for america to fight wars to remain the super power it is. therefor, in the case of obama and america there is, imo, no 'relatively peaceful'.

I reckon everyone in the world bar a few million people have done more for world peace than Lord Obama. I certainly have. Most/all people here have as well.

Yes, every moment Sassaferetto is on urban75 he is doing more for world peace than Obama. Although we did ban tobyjug, and I'm pretty sure he's doing less for world peace than Obama.

Agreed. I was just being weird.

This really makes me sick. He has done nothing and just turned up on the scene. It cheapens the prize as a whole. Maybe it's just a joke? It must be.

Not only that, but it makes it more difficult to get something done in the future. Getting some "euro-weenie" award from those "weak Europeans" won't get him any traction with the Rebublicans in Congress.

This is more about thumbing their nose at GWB than it is anything Obama has done.

Yeah, if not starting any wars for a while makes a US president relatively peaceful, by that reckoning, I've not done it for a while, does that make me relatively a virgin? :D

I'm reminded of Tom Lehrer's observation that political satire became obsolete when Henry Kissinger was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize...

Made me think of the buying a wife thread - I wonder if a relative virgin is cheaper in a mail order catalogue than a proper virgin.....:hmm:

I guess by blocking the Republicans from getting in he's done a service to world peace, just about everyone would have tried to blow themselves up in the states if McCain got in, but it is a bit of a head scratcher him getting it.

but he has! he's declared war on the rest of the solar system and started it with a pre-emptive attack on the moon, which didn't even have a despotic dictator (not one we've been told about anyway).

There's been a trend in recent years for the Nobel Peace Prize to be given to people in a position to contribute to a peace process before this contribution has actually been completed

F.W de Klerk and Nelson Mandela (1993)
Arafat, Rabin and Peres (1994)
Hume and Trimble (1998)

and now....

Obama (2009)

It seems much more an attempt to influence future events than to judge a past record. Of the three previous 'pre-emptive' Nobel prizes, I would argue that two out of three were sucessful. Of course what part the Nobel Prize itself played in it is arguable.
