Obama wins the Nobel Peace Prize

I don't have the energy for this tread. But go ahead and be cynical about the man. And who is about to be running this country?

Im not being cynical, Im much happier with him in charge than Bush, its just I dont see exactly what it is that hes actually done that deserves a nobel peace prize more than anyone else.

Fail to see the relevancy of what useless arsehole we will have in charge next or do currently, wasnt the topic.

Well if he wins the peace prize surely I should win the physics prize, I rewired a plug last month.

UAV bombing run on a funeral, scant weeks after his inaugaration. Troop increase in afghanistan. Failure to shut dow gitmo.

Still, after kissinger they might as well hand out nobel peace prizes free with Frosties

I don't know what I see more of a joke -
Obama receiving the Nobel Peace Price
or
Blair being the Middle East Envoy......

I think it's an insult to all those suffering and dying.

No apart from bring hope to millions of people, helping to change the nature of race in the US, fighting the medical lobby and republican party to try and bring health care to the poor, rising from a poor background to become president of the US. No nothing much. What have you achieved today?

He is just another product of the US political system, albeit aimed at a different consumer & rebadged.

I'm lost for words.

Now if he'd halted the war in iraq and afghanistan and legalised pot, then fair enough.

But this is a fucking joke.

I haven't read the justification myself, but isn't it more about intentions more than achievements this time? Whilst I don't think that is particularly effective, I can understand the reasoning.

Plus it may also be a move to help shore him up in the face of mounting pressure.

It's not just about cash though, is it? The middle classes transmit privelege in more ways than one.

In the context of US politics, he's pretty unusual in not having family connections and someone to buy him into power - but he did have a pretty priveleged, if not particulartly rich, upbringing.

Did his mum not have to apply for food stamps at one point, though?
I wouldn't know about that, I do know that he was privately educated from the age of 10 onwards. In terms of his education he enjoyed a level of privilege and opportunity that the vast majority of Americans (of any race) could only dream of having.

Oh dear, I seem to be the only one who thinks that he was a good choice.

meh - such is life.

Clearly not, just you and the twats on the Nobel committee.

Care to explain how he's a good choice given his intentions to increase the miltary presence/operations in Afghanistan?
