Non-Bob Dylan fans

. I really liked the harmonica intro - that was kinda special.
 "special" in the sense of "even worse than his usual apalling harmonica playing"? Do you live in opposite land?

As for the song - its alright, bit of a dirge - think he did far better stuff during that period.

here's my theory. he's not really a "singer" but an actor. he is never quite himself in his song, not like a say Damon Alburn is, or a Thom Yorke. There's never really a sense of "oh this is dylan singing about dylan's life". There's always an element of distance between Dylan and teh actual "person" in teh song. But rather than an actor, he sort of embodies this new person flawlessy so you don't get the sense of Dylan>acting>person in teh song. he just presents the new formation (and that song is a great example of that). that's why a lot of people say he is a ventrilloqist. He is so insincere that he is sincere. Maybe because his voice is "shit" on any objective measure, means he has to overcompensate by putting on an act. His talent is so strong thought that the "acted" is seemlessly real.

now send that off to pseuds corner for christs sake. but that's my theory after decades of on and off spell bound listening. there's something utterly weird about the bloke.

The lengths Dylan fans go to excuse his shite singing and harmonica playing and the last 30 years of consitantly terrible live performances is laughable.
Its not that he sings like a tortured seal who sounds exactly the fucking same on every song. Its not that he parps on the harp like a three year with a cracker toy. Its not that when he does gigs he doesnt give a fuck about making the slightest effort for his audience .
No no no - all this is in fact just yet more evidence of the genius of his bobness. Confounding expectations, remainging notions of what we expect from music, communicating on a plane that us mere mortals cannot comprehend.

I have no memory of voicing this opinion or the harmonica intro itself. So listening to it afresh, it's blatantly fantastic. I hate this period of Bob Dylan, it's his twee pop hippy nonsense period. But there's still a bit of grit there in that harmonica. He's pushing the instrument to it's limits and that will divide people as it's all off key. I approve of that. Nobody else does it like that.

Judas!

This is not singing. I don’t know what it is. Channelling. Pure personification. Multiple selves. He is eerie when he is this good:

The studio version of the original post. I just think it’s art in the highest. I don’t want to use the G word.

I'm not a fan, but his voice/singing is great. A lot of folk singers sound very sincere, very direct. With Dylan there's a casual biting distance and consequent understated emotional complexity. Paul Simon for example was seriously jealous of his voice. I totally get why he was revolutionary in his time.

this is very interesting. this is why some people say he is more an actor than anything else, because he is never sincerely himself. there is extremely strange inflections and variety in his phrasing that sort of leads to a personification of the character who is singing (which is not bob dylan). this is another great example of this. I truly truly do feel like this is some traveller, out there walking. it's not just "singing", it's personification. it's not bob dylan in the song, it's someone else.

I'm not at all familiar with his stuff though his voice is immediately recognisable.

It made me feel both irritated and bored. 3 out of 10, would not recommend.
