MREs for camping.

I used to like the bacon grill in the old tinned compo meals, plus the chocolate with fruit and nuts.

For light weight hiking / camping in most of England and Wales what’s wrong with:

OTOH they are rammed with chemicals so they can last for years without refrigeration. And some say the American ones constipate you. But maybe this is just a case of grunts being dehyrated.
I remember a talk by a former Vulcan pilot (given under the wings of one of his former aircraft) where he described the rations given to crews for long/strategic missions as having a “concreting” ingredient, so they seldom had to deal with more than fluid on a mission. He said he preferred to take some soup.

During the 90's - and for long before I'm given to understand - the packets of Rollo's in the UK ration packs had Arabic writing on the wrapper: the joke was that they'd been leftover from Suez...

I'm a big fan of Cous Cous: light, easy to make, easy to pimp. Porridge is also a good option for the same reasons: lob it in a mug, add boiling water, pimp, stir, and 3 minutes later Bob's your mums' gentleman caller.

I avoid anything marketed for camping as they’re always overpriced and usually insipid gunk.

If you like risotto get a pack of this or similar: My Risotto Perfetto Mushroom 175g

You just need to rehydrate it for 12 minutes. I highly recommend taking some extras to jazz it up...

-Dried porcini mushrooms. They weigh nothing add loads of flavour and the water you use to soak them in can be used for stock for the risotto.

-Parmesan. Get a small packet of grated stuff from the supermarket. It weights nothing and adds a lot to the meal.

-Truffle oil. Do not rough it while on an adventure, live it up. Get a small oil proof plastic bottle and decant the amount you need.

The above will give you the absolute nuts of a meal.
I’ll be honest I was waiting for the caviar to get a mention

What sort of camping are you doing?
Just regular old camping/hiking. Not super light or anything. My gear is all 3 season stuff. I did a lot of West and North Wales when i was in the UK. Dartmoor and that neck of the woods quite a bit also. BC is fucking great if you're into the outdoors.

Wild camping?

Wild camping?
Occasionally and i respect the landowners property (don’t cut fences and try to leave no trace). Less so in Canada though. If I’m going out alone i always let the local rangers know my route in case i get into difficulties. The backwoods can be unforgiving.
