I've tried to dig one out one before, it was a bloody nightmare. Ended up burning the thing out in the end, a huge amount of roots.... I'd recommend getting it tied up tight with plenty of rope before you go anywhere near it with a shovel, especially if you like that soft tissue that covers your bones.

only done it the once, in a small garden in greenwich, took 2 of us at least half a day, crazy roots and massive crater left at the end, lots and lots of digging.
plenty of cuts too, was not fun trying to get it through the house to the front, good luck!
