Mississippi John Hurt

I love his whispery vocals. I've got a live recording somewhere he did in the 60s, just before he died. It's fantastic.

There is such a wealth of, I don't, history and experience in his and other folk/blues singers voices. It's almost touchable if that makes sense. And if touchable is a real word!

Great songwriter too. Not always the case with the great bluesmen, sometimes they just have a great voice or guitar style, whereas he could write a good tune and put together a classy lyric. The hard thing with blues is to stay in the format whilst avoiding cliches. He nailed it pretty much every time.

My second favourite bluesman of them all, after Elmore James.

I listened to an album recently, Today, was a bit meh about it - should i persist then or is there a better place to start?

Not really, he didn't record much.

Some stuff in the 20's (AFAICR) and then disappeared and got re-discovered and put on TV in the 60's.

I really liked the Youtube link in the OP, but then I really like that song. I might give it another go, it does take me a few listens to get into things sometimes

Have never heard of Skip James before but I having checked I enjoyed a couple of YouTube songs by him just now.

One of my favourites is Hounddog Taylor - he of the six fingers on the left hand, and a very distinctive voice.

Said it before, I'll say it again - he's the fucking DON of country blues. That man has successfully, and sweetly, got me through more comedowns and Sunday mornings than owt else

Also, I've heard it said by several musicians that his apparently simple guitar/picking is incredibly difficult to replicate
