Massive earthquake and tsunamis hit Japan

meanwhile Gaddafi is having a field run , what a glorious world of shite we now live in - Im off to bed

Where do you see that? I'm getting this from equake

22:56 JST 15 Mar 2011 35.4N 138.7E very shallow 2.7 Yamanashi-ken Tobu-Fujigoko

... oh, I clicked the 'seismic intensity' button and that gives 6+

magnitude 6.0, no tsunami.

I keep thinking about the volcano Shinmoe Dake.
There's a 1 million reservoir of lava directly underneath, and a connected 7 million lava chamber, approx. 10 km to the north west (closest to the Philippine Sea Plate).

There was a piece in the Indie today saying this was basically the death knell of the Japanese economy because they are already carrying debts of 200% of GDP and now this will finish them off or at least kill off any vague shoots of recovery - which they have been trying to nurture for the last 20 years.

I think the Japanese are quite inventive so maybe this will spur them on to scale up renewables like Elbows said.

I know Im stating the obvious here but the shock and tragedy of the earthquake, compounded by the devastation of the tsunami, followed by endless aftershocks, and now followed by nuclear fallout near one of the most densely populated areas on earth - i feel scared and upset just thinking about it, i cant begin to imagine what must be going through peoples minds. Poor poor people.

Seeing japanese peoples stoical attitude to this (though the amount of real people on the media seems to be at a minimum), and the bravery faced by unarmed protesters in north africa, arabia etc has been a really moving experience this year.

But already they are moving on to the next line of PR defence. The future of nuclear energy around the globe is now considered to be under increased threat, so we can look forward to lots more talk along the lines of:

I saw today that while some european countries are putting their nuclear plans on hold, Poland announced today there is no going back and they're moving full speed ahead, spouting shite like 'there's no earthquakes here' etc. It will be interesting to see what J Lovelock's got to say about this

I would just like to say this

We discuss, debate and theorise about the terrible things that are happening in Japan.
I am distressed and concerned - tearfull even - about what is happening to beautiful, fascinating people.
I have had to put up with casual, uncaring and even vengeful remarks by people who as friends, shocked me beyond belief.

I wish those trying to live through this nightmare all my love - and that's fuck all help. I'm helpless, useless and that's all I can offer.

If I had a god I could pray to, I would.
