Marlborough, Wiltshire

Geri

wasn't born to follow
Does anyone know Marlborough and is it worth going to for one night's stay?

I know it. I was born there :)

It's got lots of decent pubs, restaurants and tea rooms and plenty of boutiquey shops. There's a street market on Tuesday and Saturday, some decent history around the area, the college, and a few nice scenic walks about. Savernake Forest is close by. You can certainly kill a day there eating, shopping, walking around. It claims to have the UK's widest high street.

Yeah, a nice place. I lived in one of the nearby villages for a year or so, and we always used to nip down. Nice pubs, some Tea Room that Michael Jackson used to love, market days. If you get to Savanke forest, I highly recommend seeing how close you can get to Tottenham House. Mad stately home of Lord Cardigan, the battle of the beanfields aristo, whose having a bit of bad luck in life. I don't know what they use it for now, but at points you've been able to walk around the grounds a bit.

That's the Polly Tea Rooms. Apparently Wacko went there in the 80s and its now locally accepted knowledge, though I can find no evidence of this since.

I could also tell you a bit about Tottenham House. I went to a fucked up school there in the late 80's/early 90s before it closed down and became residential rehab place run by a charity. It's amazing inside and out, though badly neglected and in need of some multi million pound renovations. A few music vids have been shot there, and Radiohead recorded some of the King Of Limbs there.

Thanks - we were thinking of staying in Avebury, but there aren't many B&Bs there and the ones that are there seem to be run by hippies! Marlborough looks quite nice.

It's a lovely place , driven through there loads of times , have been to a few cafes when we have stopped. Quite posh due to the school I guess.

Marlborough is a bit posh/twee but that does mean you get good stuff in the charity shops

My Mum has a cottage on AirBnB about 8 miles from Marlbourough if interested. She could tell you loads about the area.

hmm, the pub we stayed in six years ago seems to have been removed from all maps. It might have been the White Horse Inn, but that looks posher than my memory of it. They did a great breakfast, if it is the same.

I was at the rehab. Although that wasn't exactly what it was, it filled that function for me. Yeah, amazing building.

When I was at the rehab, someone hired out one of the still pretty nice bits for a wedding, and we were warned to keep well away. One of the wedding guests came wondering into the house, obviously coked up, and told us he used to go to school there. Not you, by any chance?

No, definitely not me. Though I have been there when Amber took over. I know one of the former team leaders very well.

I visit Avebury quite often and venture into Marlborough too.

I find the people there quite snooty and stuck up. I keep trying to find another characteristic, it I just keep finding them snooty.

Devizes is less snooty but I don't know of any B&B sthere.

I'd recommend The Royal Oak in Bishopstone for a slap up meal. They used to do basic B&B for peanuts but I think they've recently opened up some much better appointed - and probably more expensive - rooms. It's close to the Uffington Horse and Wayland's Smithy and an Iron Age fort, and not too far from Avebury if you go across country.

Well, I think I've found us a room in a farmhouse B&B practically next door to the pub in Avebury - but I will bear Marlborough in mind for the future.

We don't have a car so we need to be somewhere relatively easy to get to by bus/train.
