Marcus Fakana - Dubai and why not to go there

hash tag

Books, not bombs
Marcus has been jailed for a year for having sex with a 17 year old when he was 17.
Even though he broke the law, it would be a heartless person that did not feel for the lad.
17 years old and a year in a rough adult ( I presume ) prison doesn't bare thinking about.
I just hope the girls mother feels proud of herself ( not ) for reporting this.

I know this might be against the grade, but the bottom line when you travel anywhere is to understand that the laws of the country whether they are the same as where you are from or not.

Many people are picked up for things that we would consider trivial, but in that country are seen as super serious.

See Singapore with chewing gum, drugs rules in various countries, etc.

I agree with your sentiment though.

Agree but a 17 year old receives a year in prison - just stinks.
Could they not have found him guilty, immediately deported him and banned him for life?
A year in prison for such a young person in Dubai could well destroy him as a person.

That is not how these countries work.Stop applying logic to the situation :)

Nothing to do with this particular story, which I was unaware of until today... I used to think that I might be interested in visiting Dubai but having seen the sorts of people who tend to go there, I'm glad I never got around to it.

The interesting thing to me is that Dubai Plod only found out because the girl's Mum reported him (some hard-core parenting right there) I wonder if they met there or was there a preexisting relationship beforehand.

Would any of us have thought to research whether it was legal to have a holiday romance at that age? Come the fuck on :D

The lad was with his mum and dad, he would have assumed it's safe.

I hope the girl's mum feels guilty for the rest of her life.

You should see the cunts who live there.
Yes, I've seen The Real Housewives of Dubai 😄 . Every one of them are loaded, and vile. What surprised me is that they are all quaffing alcohol, and wearing outfits I didn't think they were allowed to wear. When picked up on why the series was made with the human rights issues, like being anti gay, they claim everything is fine, as long as it's not done in public. I'm not so sure about that, but they certainly get more than their share of alcohol.

The Emiratee locals make the expats seem thoroughly personable.

Are they the actual people who are born there? These mean girls are all ex pats from all over the world. They are awful, so if they are considered more personable than the local people, they must be real monsters.

Yes. The majority of the population of the UAE are Indians and Pakistanis. The Brit expats you're talking about are objectionable but the real scum are the locals who treat the South Asians like dogshit. It's the most openly racist society I've ever experienced. Quite astonishing.

Amazingly, not everyone wants to live in a desert. That tweet is bullshit.

Also, wtf was that girl's mum thinking? They were both over the age of consent!

ETA: I thought there were different rules for foreigners in Dubai? Like foreign women don't have to wear hijab? There are foreign women footballers playing in the Arab women's league now and they don't have to cover themselves.

The class system is literally the color of your skin with South Asians at the bottom, Europeans and some other Arabs in the middle and the locals on top. Sooner the whole place crumbles into the desert the better .

Most, if not all, of the slave labour in Dubai is done by South Asians. The conditions they live in are horrific, they have their passports taken away and they have to work in all weathers. Some of them deliberately get run over so their wages can go home to their families. Before anyone says it, no, Britain isn't great either but Dubai is just on another level when it comes to slavery.

I worked in Dubai, on and off, from 1997 to about 2001. Imagine my horror when, some time after arrival, I discovered a nugget of weed in the corner of a jacket pocket... (I flushed it - serious prison time, even for weed)

I also discovered that antidepressants are not on - I ran out, and discovered that they are not locally available, though I'd come in with a couple of weeks' supply.

It was probably fortunate that I got on rather well with the chief of police at the airport - he gave me my first gutra, and taught me how to put it on :D

They're tolerant of women not in hijab, but you can get hassle for having uncovered arms/shoulders. But they get very uptight indeed about sex - eg., adultery, should they discover it, gets dealt with very harshly.
