Lost Prophets...

From what I can garner from this and other cases, the offender doesn't generally introduce the subject until the victim and victim's family is well and truly "under the thumb". In Watkins' case it seems that he started relationships with these young women when they weren't fully emotionally-developed, and then introduced drugs into the equation. he was in a position of dominance, and then enhanced that position through the giving (and quite possibly the withholding) of drugs, followed by talking the young women into molesting their own children (who knows, perhaps for a "dare" or a "laugh"? :( ). Once he had that to hold over them, convincing them to let him molest their children would have been far simpler than simply walking up to them and saying "I'm a paedo, let me fuck your kiddies".

fair enough. its not really something that i've ever known the dynamics of, thank G-d. :(

i mean its not the sort of thing you'd tell anyone is it?
"what do you like doing in your spare time"
"i'm a paedophile"

he must have been massively massively cocky to think that he wouldn't get caught, and thats what i don't understand. it seems to me a common feature of these kinds of people that they don't care about being caught or think they will be, which is a sort of similar thing to the lack of remorse, like a lack of thinking about any consequences or knowing/caring that their acts are wrong and disapproved of.

He was a rock star, he lived for a long time in a world where there were no negative consequences. Whatever he did he got away with, however badly he behaved he was surrounded by people who told him his shit didn't smell.

It's often not so much cockiness, as in having such a hold over the people you're victimising that the possibility of being held to account for your crimes is lessened. Many predators are extremely capable when it comes to emotional manipulation too, especially when using tricks such as giving and withholding approval, and often select victims who are seeking approval.

but even if you are, how do you get it to come up in a conversation?

if you told the majority of people you were a paedophile 99% of them would be disgusted. and you might even be lucky to be alive. He must have been able to tell they would be responsive or interested in paedophilia before he said it, or that they were weak and impressionable enough to go along with it.
He told Joanne Majic when they were going out and she went to the police.

They did nothing.

As he predicted.

so how was he eventually caught? did someone report him or was it through a porn site etc?

Its unbelievable how the police behave in cases like this. It's like if you're famous and have lots of money they seem to just ignore whatever you're doing  :(

If drug use played a role in the abuse then perhaps he just didn't care if he was going to be caught. You dont exactly think rationally on the drugs he was said to be using I.e ghb and meth.

Thing is, crack and meth are known to be associated with extreme sexual behaviour. Which isn't to remotely prejudge users of those drugs or excuse the behaviour, but use does come up alot in child abuse cases. Have to say the details of this case are far beyond words to describe, but we all know that.

I'm a bit irritated at the drug thing tbh. It feels a bit like refusing to take responsibility- 'I was off my head' rather than 'I'm a sick fuck'

Nobody is blaming the drugs, he is 100% responsible. I'm just saying drugs lower your inhibitions, and especially that GHB stuff that he was found in possession of makes folk pretty kinky IMO.

Has he been on remand whilst waiting for trial?

I was wondering that. Or if he is banged up now. Separate thing entirely, but the Maoist cult bloke who is alleged to have kept slaves in London for a few decades got bailed, so it strikes me that things can get pretty lenient.

How fucking sad is that? :( No negative consequences....let that sit for a while...I don't care who he is....we all need boundaries and cases like this and the knowledge that for some there are no negative consequeneces screams at me that we actively collude, culturally speaking, in this kind of nastiness.

Actually, he can't have been on remand because some offences were committed whilst he was on bail.

It seemed from the half article I read that his barrister basically said he was off his head and didn't remember what he'd done. Was the walesonline one linked earlier in the thread. Don't want to go find it as everything I read about this case makes me feel iller and iller

Absolutely. It often starts with the control, manipulation, debasement and sexual humiliation of the woman. I'm not talking about consensual experimentation, but the deeply objectifying use of the woman for the abusers gratification. This serves as an initial filter of individuals who might be sufficiently damaged, vulnerable to exploitation, desperate or just plain amoral.

I had to unlike that as it's horrific, but I can sort of see/understand the path as you are describing it.

We have to see them. Turning our heads away because it's all too disgusting is IMO one way in which we actively/indirectly collude. :(
Yeah, I understand that. But it's so difficult to- it's like looking into hell. I said up thread it hope someone has the stomach to take a long, hard look at how he got to where he got to and the women got to where they got to so lessons can be learned. At the moment I can't even read the articles though... It's utterly, utterly incomprehensible and repulsive to me. Which I know doesn't help move anyone forward in understanding, prevention or anything, but...
