Long weekend in Belgrade

miss direct

misfungled
I'm going to Belgrade for a conference and am staying for a long weekend. Has anyone been before and has any tips? I'm after a place to stay, interesting food (NOT Turkish or Middle Eastern), bars, park, art, walks. Thank you!

It's been years since I was in Belgrade but the Kalemegden Park/Fortress is a must, as is St Sava Cathedral, though be mindful of when you visit and exit walking backwards out of the church. The National Gallery was closed when I was there but I follow it on FB and it looks excellent. The ethno graphic museum was pretty good also. As for food I like Balkan food a lot, the best place I visited was simple called '?' Don't know if it's still there. If you can visit some of the more modernist architecture it's well worth the time. You can always head to Savamala for the hipster vibe. When I first went to belgrade back in 2006 the three carrots pub was the first place I went to orintate myself. Friendly place. Of course if you want night life head to the barges on the Danube, real fun but open to early hours.

I haven't been back since 2012 and then it was full of Americans like Prague in the 90's. Nowt wrong with that, but it's tiring listening to some young un's talking about their novel or finding themselves. I imagine the prices are higher than I was there last. Oh I found taxi drivers to be really honest, except then one coming from Tesla Airport.

Enjoy it, it's not beautiful but it is something else. I love it.

Its definitely not the most beautiful of cities, but the history is interesting.

The fort that looks over the danube (I forget the name) is probably the most interesting tourist point. I'd agree with St Sava Cathedral, although I didn't walk out backwards?

The Tesla museum is worth a visit too......

Foodwise I noticed they seemed to be very keen on Coffee Shops/Bakeries - There's some cracking baked goods there.

There is always Skadarlija, which is a very pretty street but given the size of the cobblestones bloody hard to walk on.

When your coming out of the airport completely ignore the taxi drivers clamouring for business at what appears to be the main door. Go up the escalator to the right instead, exit that door . And use those taxis instead .

Kalmegdan overlooks the confluence of 2 rivers, the Sava and the Danube, great views. And it's an absolutely massive place that's always got something going on .

There's a museum of film in the old town centre, open all day, free films seemingly randomly chosen . Zemun has got some of the best restaurants .

If it´s in a few weeks when the weather is warmer, def go and check out the "beaches" on the side of the lakes in this park. Good place for a swim and stuff.

Bars and clubs on the river were fun. Worth investigating online tho as they are all very different styles. Some traditional balkan music on one or two of them though.

The fortress castle in the park is nice, good views from there too.

Big derrelict buildings blown up during the NATO bombing worth checking out too. Theyve been left as a memorial, supposedly.

Mount Avala outside of town has some cool views.

Check out if any festivals are on at the time you´re going. Link to the wikitravel page, which lists some yearly festivals and events.

Are you gonna have time to go anywhere else in Serbia or the region?

Anywhere you would recommend?

I liked walking around the park and fortress, people seem to go there for sunset with a drink. The city centre is nice for a wander too, and I stayed in a lovely neighbourhood downhill from Republic Square, wide shady streets lined with trees and cafes. A nice cobbled street with lots of restaurants too. Sorry I don't know all the names of these places but I found them easily using wikitravel and just wandering about.

Don't try to ride the bus without a ticket or you'll get a big fine...like I did.

Balls to that. They must have actually employed inspectors, in the three times I've been I never once got stopped for not having a ticket. Arses to crackdowns.
