Lone travelling in Australia + Does anyone have contacts in Brisbane?

My buddy's BF has got homesick and has broken the news to her that he's flying home (back to the UK) on Thursday!

This is going to leave her on her todd.

She needs work, she's mostly been doing fruit work for the last year but is very resourceful and can pretty much turn her hand to anything.

She wants to travel north (she has a car), everyone is gonna tell her to come home cos travelling on her own isn't safe, I think she'll be fine.

Any thoughts/tips?

Yeah, she's done enough for her second year, she'll be applying for that in August.

The best paid work I had when I was in Oz, some 25 years ago, was being a labourer on a building site. When I worked on farms I had some fixed national award rate which was not much, the labouring was much more. Depends if she is tough enough, the work was pretty hard physically.

As to travelling up to the north, if she has her own car she should be ok, just don't pick up groups of young men hitching would probably be my advice.

she could join couchsurfing? good community/meet up stuff on there, i'm sure there'd be decent folks around the brizvegas area.

for work i would really really recommend a website called helpx.net (Help Exchange) there is loads on there. 20 euros to join for 2 years, and well worth it IME. volunteering, hostel work, agriculture stuff, fixing up peoples' homes... it's all there.

travelling alone in australia is no massive worry, there are the obvious risks and women should probs be a bit more careful, but jeez, safe as houses mostly...

those islands off the coast from there n up north, fraser island etc, are pretty stunning.

Up north, Brizzy, Cairns etc. should be plenty of work. Darwin's a bit of a boom-town at the moment so I'm told but you'd be out on a bit of a limb there, I suspect.
