Lochness

Hellsbells

World's best procrastinator
Hi,

I'm going to be in Scotland for a few days at the end of July and wondered whether Lochness is a nice place to stay. It looks nice from the pictures I've seen and it seems there's lots to do there.

I'm going to be arriving in Inverness about 1pm on a Tuesday and have until 4pm on Thursday. Is Lochness a good option or is there somewhere better I should stay?

Depends on what you want to do?

Personally, the accessability for other parts West is the main attraction for Loch Ness, not so much the area itslf, which tends to be a bit touristy (in the worst busloads of/tartan-tat form) for me. That said, there are still good places & the far side of the loch - Dores, Foyers, Whitebridge etc is a very different matter, slower pace & less visited, but with a more beautiful & varied hinterland with plenty of outdoor acitivities. :)

An alternative base in the area might well be Cannich. Accessable by bus from Inverness & at the head of a couple of Scotlands most beautiful & interesting glens - Glen Affric & Glen Strathfarrar. You need to apply to the warden for Strathfarrar, the lower part of the glen (Remnant of the old Caledonian Forest) is a private nature reserve so they only let a small number of vehicles through each day, @20 IIRC (walkers or cyclists are not restricted tho) & is well worth the visit. :)

Plenty of accomodation of all sorts in & around Cannich & its popularity as a base for climbers/other outdoor activities can make it a pretty good place to visit. :)
