Local Elections May 5th 2022

Just returned from our local polling station, went more for a walk and the chance to speak to another live human being in the flesh rather than any desire to take part in the democratic process. Other than the 3 folks doing it, I was the only person there.
Someone who won't be voting is Youngest Q, She's still registered here so we have her card. I did ask her at the weekend if she was planning to register somewhere else whilst she is at Uni but her answer was along the lines of :-
"They're all wankers here too Dad"
Turned 20, 2 days ago but she seems to have sussed out politics already.

I think students can register at both their home and term time addresses but can only vote in one area on the day.

Get the feeling Labour will have a harder time than they think in London. Might make gains but the margins in a lot of areas are going to be far less than they're used to. So many councils where even if your aim was to be shambolic, corrupt, incompetent wankers you'd struggle to outdo what Labour have managed over the years.

Anyway, voted earlier, Green and TUSC, very little hope in either winning and not a fan of the Greens tbh but fuck knows. Few more lost votes might scare local Labour into not being quite as shit quite so often.

Not for them presumably...? :hmm:

Well, no. I would say 'obviously', but I guess it's not that obvious.

TBH I hadn't even realised the fuckers were standing in my ward, and given that the limit of their campaigning has been to stick some paper through the door on polling day itself, I can't see their candidate (an ex-BNP old duffer) gaining many votes. They have an irritating little shit who is standing in the neighbouring ward who is a bit more proactive. He's a fucking halfwit, but thrives on any attention. Will be more keeping an eye on him.

There's been a big effort in Stamford Hill West to get rid of the two Tory councillors here, who are both Orthodox Jews that are largely invisible to the rest of the community.

Just had our only leaflet through from them at midday today. Standing on a platform of low council tax, weeky bin collections and scrapping LTNs.

So there I was, washing Mrs Tags car when I got stopped by two Tories who were canvassing my flats. Have you voted? Who did you vote for? I let them have it and bet they wished they had never asked.
Could be a good night. Control of Wandsworth stands a good chance of passing to labour. I'm told our result is expected by about 3AM. 👍

I had to go to the shops so I stopped into the polling station to spoil my ballot. The staff there told me cheerfully that I have three votes. "There's three worth voting for?"

They seemed to find this amusing.

Turns out I knew a Green candidate from years back (not my crackhead Green candidate mate), who whilst a bit odd, is sincere, so they got one and the TUSC candidate wasn't a twat either, so they got one.

I feel a bit dirty.

I'm physically tired and couldn't work up any enthusiasm regarding Bristol's mayoral referendum so didn't bother ...

I'm popping out for a pint later. The polling station is next door so I'll probably vote Green x3.

Just to show Labour they won't win by turning right.

Ugh. I voted Labour because one of them was a neighbour I'm friendly with and I couldn't exactly vote for one and draw a penis so they got all three. I feel a bit dirty.

My MP was leafletting by the polling station but stepped back when I gave him a filthy look. Hopefully he's remembering all the times I've told him to fuck off.

Can we elect the dogs instead?

You can across the pond.

Iron paw salute to those mighty canines! Ruff justice for fat cats!

I asked the clerks how they thought it was going to work when we all have to produce ID. Mayhem, they thought. Queues and complaints. There'd need to be an absolutely massive campaign for people to know to bring it along and even then, half of them wouldn't. It will take ages to process each one. 'I don't understand why we don't have electronic voting anyway' grumbled one of them 'Everything else is online these days.'
I didn't get on to the bigger questions of ID, obviously.

One of the places they trialed ID in the May 2019 elections was where my Middle daughter and her fiance live. Paddy took his Irish passport with him which apparently started a lively and good natured debate about whether he is better looking with or without his beard. I've never seen him without his beard but according to Middle he is clean shaven in his passport photo. They took it as proof of ID without complaint though.
