Local Elections May 5th 2022

The full, sorry tale of Croydon's ongoing...yes, really...ONGOING count for the council elections!😲

Fucking hell, if they can't even count votes, it's hardly surprising they went bankrupt.

One interested observer, Tim Crowley, a Tory councillor in Sutton, tweeted snarkily, “I’ve worked out that since the polls shut on Thursday at 10pm, you could have flown to Sydney had lunch outside the Opera House and flown back and still not have had the New Addington result in Croydon declared.”

:D

“Not good enough,” Keith Starmer’s pompous shadow justice minister tweeted this morning.

"Many of the problems at the count stem from the decision of the council chief executive, Katherine Kerswell, to conduct the complicated mayoral and ward councillor counts in the sports halls and theatre of an independent school. Trinity needed its main sports hall on Friday, the day after the voting was held, for A level exams, and so Kerswell, as Returning Officer, decided to delay the start of the tallying for Croydon’s first elected Mayor until 5.30pm on Friday – 19½ hours after the polling stations closed. It was all downhill from there."

What a total fuck up. :D

I'd say that Croydon Labour got what they deserved, but that's unfair on poor Val Shawcross. She's a good'un, even if the rest of them are useless.

If accurate...finally...Croydon going to NOC...

apparently the vacancy is because the tory who became mayor had also stood as a councillor, and you're not allowed to be both, so there will be a by-election for the council seat, which will probably go tory

Green 'kingmakers'!

FAF that the scum couldn't even beat the incumbents that had bankrupted the borough!

No need to panic, though...despite CroLab's dismal showing, BlueLab's true believer lives to fight another socialist.

Seemed to be a 5 way contest in some parts of Croydon, with Greens and 'Taking the Initiative' standing - I'd not really heard of the latter before. And noticed that the vermin were branding themselves 'local conservatives'...

they did quite a lot of campaigning, including driving a car round blaring their agenda out, which was a bit annoying. I would have been interested but had clocked that some of the leaders were anti-lockdown borderline conspiracy loons on social - before they tidied up their pages. there main thing was being outside the establishment and they got some decent backers in the black community.

Hi, I was at some of the count in Croydon and have some knowledge of local politics here. TtIP were heavily targeting South Norwood ward, which is the only ward they ended up really getting an okay result in. From what I gather through conversation is they have connections with local evangelical church groups, I know they have some connections with figures such as Clive Morrison, who were a part of the old Christian Party (James Hargreaves old party). They were certainly the sharpest dressed bunch at the counts, sharp suits and dresses, at first glance without noticing the rosettes I thought a couple of them may be with The Conservative Party.

Not really kingmakers as the vast majority of any executive power lies with the mayor, due to the personally terrible idea of moving to a directly elected mayoral system. And anyway, the two Greens are to the left of Croydon Labour (that's not hard), but if they were to work more with any one it wouldn't be Perry's lot.
