It's easier than ever - just click on the nine links and play the tunes, then vote for your favourite one using the poll above.

Simple.

If a kind soul could bundle them all into a single zip, it would be even easier, although the myspace ones would be tricky to turn into mp3...

Constructive reviews are always nice too.

Hope all the links work, obviously if not let it be known and they'll be edited.

Well done to all those who made the effort.

;)

One vote only, and you can't vote for yourself (the votes are public!)

Oh, and could this be made a sticky now, instead of the current comp thread, if possible, cheers!

Bollocks - I c&p'ed them from the abbrieviated versions...

Cheers, give me 5 minutes.

Fixed them (I hope!)

Umm...noo. My entry was a tune called "Mae'n Braf".

(I've had Christmas on Acid as an entry previously, and only posted it as as a reminder of an Urban 'christmassy' tune, sort of.)

You entered twice - so i stuck the first one in...

I'll amend the link...

OK I'll start... come on you lazy feckers!!

---------------------------
mwgdrwg - 'mae n braf'

Loving this, reminds me of the more decent Orbital sessions, playful and well produced, can't fail with that 303 sound. Can't help feeling there needed to be a huge crescendo in there somewhere, but it's really nice. Really really nice.

MC5/audiotech - 'anarchy' (aka "all get up")

Nice chopping of the breaks, reminded me a bit of Mark Stewart, or Tackhead, it's a good sound but seemed a little hissy in the recording, or is that just my headphones?

ninjaboy - sci horror

Art of Noise meets Aphex Twin on angel dust. The tempo is just wrong.
The perfect tune to commit mass murder with missiles to.
And that's not a bad thing.
Would liked to have heard this at a more respectable 165-170 BPM though

atomic suplex - 'cheese and biscuits'

More than a touch of Bowie's "suffragette city" going on here, which is nice, you've a great sound and everything I've heard of your stuff really comes alive. nice job!

chazegee - 'tortoise'

fucking mad. whereabouts in the psyche the concept came from will remain a mystery. can't even begin to describe it - people should click it and try and figure it out for themselves.
I felt almost guilty after hearing it, the same feeling I imagine one feels in a foreign country enjoying the hospitality of a non-english speaking host, in the knowledge that you'd just raped and killed his dog.

bonfirelight - 'south of the border'

Don't get many rock bands in these comps, so this is a welcome entry.
I love the Shadows-esque guitar, it's a well produced track with echoes of that cowboy rock sound, nice chorus, dunno if you recorded this live in one lump, but I think it would benefit from a studio recording with much more attention spent on the drumkit/bass guitar combination, to beef up the rhythm section.
It's a cut above the regular pub-rock fare, that's for sure, so nice one.

damnhippy - "nice catch idiot"

This is great, funky as fuck, works on many levels, love the way the drums are capped to get that stop-start feel, and the filtering is subtle enough to be right.
It sounds like you had fun making this.
It's tight and well recorded, kind of reminds me of Coldcut/Ninjatune's more outlandish releases, definitely one of my faves so far.

hiccup - 'ruff'

Looks like we both favoured the double-bass sound this time around!
Sounds good, but a little dry on the effects for my tastes (only because I drench everything in reverb).
It's nice and moody, I'd be inclined to spend more time making the hi-hats a little more complex, subtle pushes in volume and variations in pattern work wonders (especially if you lob them through a tight delay afterwards)
Nice melody though, understated but solid.

--------------------------

It was a close run thing between mwgdrwg and damnhippy... but in the end damnhippy got the vote, that tune totally rules.

Well done to all as per usual for squeezing entries in at fairly short notice.

;)

mwgdrwg - "Mae'n Braf"

Production is good, but for me this sort of blip, bleep music bores me to death.

pk - "santas step"

Nicely themed for the festive season and I always enjoy listening to pk's experimental breaks. I particularly like the bass sound on this. Well put together.

ninjaboy - "sci horror"

Too rampant for me. The drums appear distorted and made my ears bleed. If that was the aim good result.

atomic suplex - "cheese and biscuits"

I like the vocals on this, in fact well mixed overall. However, a bit too much distortion on the guitar for my liking. A good tune nonetheless.

chazegee - "tortoise"

"Fernando Ole", or something like that is the original name of this song, which I notice has not been credited. Putting over the this ripped off backing track with vocals about a "fucking tortoise" and a crap Spanish guitar sound is pretty poor to be honest.

bonfirelight - "south of the border"

Good bass lines, drums to match, plus a good vocal mix and nice guitar with reverb makes this a nice track to listen to. Well done.

damnhippy - "nice catch, idiot"

Love the funky beat, but the song is crying out for vocals.

hiccup - "ruff"

Minimalist tune with a squawking parrot in the background - Mmmm.

So for me it's a choice between:

bonfirelight - "south of the border"
damnhippy - "nice catch, idiot"
atomic suplex - "cheese and biscuits"

?????????????????????????????????????

Difficult, but I'm going for:

damnhippy - "nice catch, idiot"

Happy New Year to all!

Your right pk - in the recording, which I did in my lo-fi days using soundfonts through a soundblaster card and then triggering the samples from a MIDI controller as I played it live. Took an earth to do. Oh how technology and sampling has moved on since that time. ;)

Right, good work PK, I'm going to give proper reviews this time, and MC5 will hopefully be crap so he can feel the sharp end of my stick:p :D

And what a bumper crop we have this year, here's my reviews...

mwgdrwg - "Mae'n Braf"

This is good 303 driven ambient, nice melodies, and a good bubbling feel. Only complaint would be that it could have done with a few samples or ting to give it a bit more texture.

mc5 - "Anarchy"

A very promising start, a real meld of swamping guitars, bad man bleeps and fuck off breaks, a very big sound. Slightly looses it's way at the end, and could do with some decent arranging, or a kick ass vocal (PM me;) )

pk - "santas step"

Boy done good, some of his best work yet, the beats really kick in something proper and the production is second to none, the melodies have that flavour that reminds me of young woman putting rose petals on their fannies, and the double bass chopped in at the end? Luverley.

ninjaboy - "sci horror"

As always, good uncompromisng stuff from the Mingeboy, nice and dirty, but didn't quite have the character of the Autumn tune, still rufnek though.

atomic suplex - "cheese and biscuits"

It's a great tune, very poppy with special lyrics, If I can love a tune that sounds like something off the Rocky Horror Picture show, it must be very good indeed:D :p

bonfirelight - "south of the border"

Very good, sounds like early Nirvana, with added Sergio Mendes, eat that.
I think the sound could do with a bit more developent and identity, but all in all a very tight band.

damnhippy - "nice catch, idiot"

Sausage something, great name, great tune, a real acid funk workout that takes no prisoners, infact it does very bad things to the prisoners before not taking them...Loves it like that.

hiccup - "ruff"

It was quite ponderous, that or my computer might be packing up, I think hiccup said this was a last minute obscurity, so he knows he can do better, 6 out of 10.:p

Fucking hell, can't decide a winner, will have a stink.

Good work you fuckers, and a very happy New Year.

Not nearly enough people voting on this. Mind you if it stays where it is things are looking pretty sweet for me.

I posted in the main forum to get peeps accross, I even snorted a line of Colman's to hype it. Lazy fekkers:rolleyes::D

Nearly 34,000 members of urban and what do we have? Just seven measly votes. Pathetic!

Fuckin' anarchists. :p :D

Good effort folks. My thoughts:

ChrisBravoTown - "Mae'n Braf"
nice arrangement, acid not really my thing but it's a chilled, happy kinda tune.

pandakiller - "santa's step"
sounds a bit like U2 :p nah, I love it. Bassline rocks. Wondered about the guitar first time round but they do sit well together.

MC5 - "anarchy"
Nice beats, can't help feeling it needs to do more though.

Ninjaboy - "sci-horror"
Madness :D Done very well, mind  Yeah I like this.

atomic suplex - "cheese and biscuits"
Sounds sort of halfway between Supergrass and the Scissor Sisters, with a bit of punk. Not sure if that's a compliment but I like it anyhow :)

chazegee - "tortoise"
Tortoise? You're going to fuck a tortoise?? WTF? Nice tune though.

bonfirelight - "south of the border"
I'm sure it's a dead good tune but this genre just leaves me cold. Sorry. Here, have a blow on me whistle. Top one, nice one, sorted. ;)

damnhippy - "nice catch, idiot"
This just rocks. What's it made with?

hiccup - "ruff"
A little bit random and minimal for me, I want more structure and complexity. But it's a good arrangement.

My vote's got to go to damnhippy. Good tune dude. Oh, and I promise to enter something in the next one.

I liked all of them, but ninjas was the only one that held my interest and was consistently mental thoughout the track.

mrdrwg - nice trippy sitting on a beach sort of music. i did want this to go an extra bit from where it went, nice, but didn't quite develop into anything, just plodded along. nicely produced

pk - ha, this is pretty good, bit too professional for my liking, doesn't have the rawness. fell into that trap i've been stuck in where you make these sounds that amaze the fuck out of you but the tune loses out, the bassline barely gets a look in. nice roller but the joi de vivre is missing (disclaimer: i'd say that about most released dnb as well.....)

audiotech - this is about 100 times more to my taste than the last tunes. not very well EQ'd or anything, but it has that old skool sound. beautiful break you got, you could do a lot with this tune. send me the samples.....:D
definetely a lot there, but needs a going over

atomic suplex : hehehe always like hearing you songs, proper daft sense of humour. my favourite so far, reminds me of brown eyed girl. same as always excellent production and pure daftness

chazegee : fucking excellent. wtf are you on about??? :D:D the music is a lot better on this one, reminds me of that photo of the two massive tortoises shagging. really like this, dunno when i would ever listen to it, but fucking class.

bonfirelight : indie rock. i honestly can't say how good or bad this is at the moment cos it just sounds like sitting in some fucking shit pub to me. like the surf guitar sound but not my bag....

damnhippy - chemical brothers. this is pretty good mang, like the use of the different breaks. was getting ready to slate this cos i got so sick of that 4/4 guitar loops and drum loops shit, but i liked that.

hiccup : like this one, your tunes are kind of frustrating tho hiccup cos they always sound like they need to kick off but never quite make it. you shold just stick a really mad bit on after a minute or so where it all goes off.

my vote: chazegee

chazegee, Ninjaboy. I've no idea where the samples are to this toon are now. Therefore, I can't pass them on for a remix, which would have been interesting. ;) I only have the mixed down file like. :)

agentlesbos thanks for the vote. ;)
