Civic crowdfunding is privatisation masquerading as democracy
Sadiq Khan is the latest public figure to support crowdfunding to pay for city projects, from libraries to swimming pools. But who does this leave out?

Reminded me of this recent Brixton Buzz article.

Lambeth launches the Youth Opportunities Fund – and asks for your support
This Christmas Eve, Lambeth Council is asking for donations for their Lambeth Youth Opportunities Fund, which works with Lambeth’s voluntary and community sector to support innovative local program…
www.brixtonbuzz.com

The Youth Opportunities fund is set up by Lambeth Council along with London Community Foundation. I did get a letter about it while back.

Only glancing through it looks like Council funded project to distribute funds to youth groups.

Its not. It Council asking locals to cough up to put money into a fund. Which then local groups can apply for.

As Anna Minton points out initatives like this blur boundaries between Council providing services and charity.

Better would be for the Council to give list of projects that people if they wish can directly give to.

One thing that is very time consuming for voluntary groups to do is apply for grants.

This Lambeth fund will be another grant making body to apply to.

So thought I would start this thread to list local organisations that help people so that donations can go direct to them.

Rather than through a Lambeth Council front organisation. So this Council can make themselves look good.

Grove Adventure Playground

One can do monthly support.

Reatarted by local residents after long battle to stop Council building on it as a "development site"

Now very sucessful and important asset to local community in the less well off area of Loughborough Junction.

Brixton Peoples Kitchen.

Another organisation that have done a lot for people during pandemic

Great thread Gramsci
I'd like to add Cook to Care
Based in Loughborough Junction but delivering healthy meals to those in need in the borough and beyond. My husband volunteered with them over the summer in the kitchen and is now helping with admin. Many volunteers are chefs on furlough and some of the young people from the Marcus Lipton youth centre have got involved in paid and voluntary roles. Run by a young woman with amazing energy and drive. Donations (big and small) and volunteers (for delivery, admin and cooking - you don't need to be a chef!) are sought to help sustain 1,000 meals a week

Here's a load of local charities that Buzz donated to after the Bowie night:

School Ground Sounds
In keeping with the memory of Brixton-born Bowie, the largest donation of £500 went to School Ground Sounds, a Brixton-based charity who work with secondary schools and young people in lower income areas to provide additional music opportunities and to enhance their music education.
