Libya - civil unrest & now NATO involvement

How do you enforce a no fly zone? And is this to stop flights into the country with mercenaries and equipment or can it stop internal flights? People calling for it on twitter. Are they just grasping at straws?

You enforce it with fighter jets & other threats. There have also been desperate calls for UN bluehats. Both of these requests are not compatible with the timescales we are dealing with here, I fear, even if other issues could be overcome.

Ooh, more faint signs of hope.

Al Jazeera Arabic: Sources: Two military aircrafts land in Benghazi after the pilots refused to obey orders to bomb the city.

Hope its not just a mangling of the earlier story.

the sixth fleet should take out the Libyan air-force take them minutes couple of f18s inbound even the most heroic bomber pilot is going to flee.
stopping people bombing civilians that's a no brainier.
puts a lot of pressure on the regime for little risk to US forces 21st century jets against 1960s jets no real contest.
Obama could do that and look good.

Sorry, but you've been watching too many right wing 1950's cowboy films. The US cavalry Never come to the rescue of the civilians. Their leaders do prop up and arm dictators though....Even obama

Argh, reports of airstrike/bombardments of multiple locations in Libya (other than Benghazi & Tripoli) are coming in now.

Well if they blow up all the migs .They can be in the front of the queue to sell the new leaders new jets. Its not rescuing civilians its really aggressive marketing.
And everyone thought Gaddafi was a harmless eccentric turns out he is the one going out drenched in blood.

Recent news from BBC live page that I think are worthy of pasting here...

2108: Libya's army is reported to have withdrawn from areas by the Egyptian border, Reuters reports. Egypt's army is said to have reported the movement via its Facebook page.
2105: However, in Fashloom, a poorer area of Tripoli, the situation is reported to be much worse, our information says.
2101: More unconfirmed reports from eyewitnesses in Tripoli: the streets of middle-class residential areas are reported to be quiet, punctuated only by the sounds of cars going round blaring pro-Gaddafi slogans.

BBC just now: Reports of Black african and white, possibly eastern european mercenaries shooting people dead in suburbs of Tripoli. I saw a video of a dead black african in military uniform on youtube, being displayed by Lybian protestors in Benghazi. These videos seem to last a short time before Youtube apply their censorship policy, the wankers..

The revolution will not be televised!!!

But it is, even if only for a short time, people are risking their lives to get info out before youtube pull the plug so, I recommend this website:

http://keepvid.com/

Go here, paste video link and download it before it gets pulled.

Is there a video section to upload to on this forum?

Someone on twitter is contradicting AlJazeera, says they have spoken to someone in Musrata and there have been no bombings there.

My best hope right now is that fear of bombings is being used by the regime far more than actual bombings at this point.

Someone was saying on BBC News 24 that it seems odd that Gaddafi's son made a TV appearance as Gaddafi fancies himself as a public speaker. They suggested it suggested he may have left Tripoli.

The pilots who landed in Malta are reported to have said that their colleagues didn't do the same as them. ie, the rest of the squadron attacked targets they were ordered to attack.

There is a media black out but all the reports coming out are of destruction which is hardly good for the Gaddafy regime. I mean, why would there be people exagerating what's happening?

There are some contradictions, as the Malta stuff was hours ago, yet some people reckon they have called Benghazi within the last hour or so and these same people have not reported any news of bombing of Benghazi.

Earlier on R4 they were reporting William Hague as saying that he has information that Gaddafi was on his way to Venuzeula.

I confess to knowing very little about Libya itself beyond the Roman ruins it has but has all of this trouble come out of the blue or have there been some serious tensions brewing for a while ?

Well they had the same dictator for about 40 years.

It's a rumour. There are always rumours like this. Venezuela denies it is the case.

Yes, Gadafi has been a fuckcunt for quite a while now. You may also have noticed that there has been a wave of uprisings and protests in the middle east the last few weeks against repressive regimes.

Question. Why is William Hague circulating rumours about Gaddafi going to Venezuela?

Is it normal for politicians to circulate rumours live on TV? Not very professional is it. Sounds very distracted.

Also,

On BBC Someone in an interview just called for a NON flight zone around all Libian cities. Who could impose such a lockdown? The USA perhaps? No doubt their fleets will be in attendance with all that’s going on near “their” Oil.

Listening to the reporting is like listening to wishful thinking, even one of the posts in this thread is naively wishing for US intervention.

The ruling elites must be shitting bricks about all these revolutions. What are the odds on the good old US of A “intervening” in Lybia soon?

The reporting of this latest developement of the arab world revolutions to me seems to be more controlled and geared towards provoking emotions that would conclude with the acceptance of an outside intervention being acceptable (the BBC is using the word "intervention" ever more frequently as I write. Intervention rather than the people of Libia themselves actually winning their revolution

Stoat Boy,

there has been serious anger and resentment but any protests have been mercilessly crushed in the past, some students protested years back, there punishment was to be hung on national television, quite a message to send out! For large parts of his rule the average person has been so scared of the regime, well, the people have finally had enough. They were presumably empowered by the uprisings across the region (and access via technology to media other than the state propoganda). I am no expert but he deserves his Mad Dog monicker, at one point apperantly he ordered everybody in the country to own a chicken.

Some of the things I wonder about..

What did the UN Secretary General say during his telephone call with Gaddafi?

What would have to happen before America would step in militarily?

I just heard a disressing voice from Tripoli saying that the military were killing hundreds, thousands ..

Is somebody putting words in your mouth or are you thinking the same as me?
