Libya - civil unrest & now NATO involvement

It's still over. Last gasp.

They are already on the backfoot. If it goes according to script more protesters will turn out tomorrow. More army will swap sides. More diplomats will resign and condemn.

*hopes*
Hoping so too.. though the woman behind this website, was just of a skype call with her brother there (recorded on site) very recently.. she was on Radio 5.. the site has some great info and is being updated regularly with some great links...

@ShababLibya has been a good read on twitter, constantly updating and seemingly in the know.

Much too quick to 'confirm' things though, gets some stuff right but cannot call all tweets from this person credible. Sure hope they got the stuff about the Werfalla tribe wrong.

@ AKA It is quite good, yes. Although the other day I linked to something on it and the next day they changed it so my link went to something else making my post nonsensical.

@ChangeInLibya is doing a good job of trying to get to the bottom of the Warfalla rumours that @ShababLibya tweeted.

@ChangeInLibya @apk222 Warfalla r still w protesters. Some guard that always w gaddafi are killing ppl pretending 2 b warfalla #Libya

@ChangeInLibya Apparently the crap about Warfalla defecting is because some people affiliated with the clan are revolutionary guard & are klng ppl

All that is left before the masses now is the struggle to eliminate all prevailing forms of dictatorial governments, be they parliament, sect, tribe, class, one-party system, two-party system or multi-party system, which falsely call themselves democracies.

Green book :D

It is being reported that a commando unit in Benghazi, Libya joined the protesters earlier today and attacked the mercenaries units. Benghazi is now Reported to be officially free and owned by the people and not Gaddafi. Video of people celebrating in the streets of Benghazi now

Regarding the Warfalla tribe, earlier story from AlJazeera English has he quote that suggested they are on the protesters side:

Akram Al-Warfalli, a leading figure in the Al Warfalla tribe, one of Libya's biggest, told the network: "We tell the brother (Gaddafi), well he's no longer a brother, we tell him to leave the country." The tribe lives south of Tripoli.

Taken from this story that covers lots of ground regarding recent events in Libya http://english.aljazeera.net/news/africa/2011/02/2011220232725966251.html

Suspect only possibility for regime is if they can hold on to Tripoli overnight - if Green Square is full of protestors at dawn they are gone. I do hope they can do, but unimaginable what they are probably facing.

Saying solidarity in the face of their bravery seems stupidly inadequate.

Caller from Tripoli to AlJazeera English right now says that green square has pro-Gadaffi people & riot police in it as of maybe half an hour ago, and no anti-regime protesters.

No offense AKA pseudonym but that news is many hours old now, as is the video.
would have been handier if someone had of posted it then?
anyhows im crossposting all over the place but i am trying me best to keep on top of current threads, ircs etc...

Sorry, want meaning to be rude, was just trying to keep the timeline of events clear here. The news was talked about extensively in this thread earlier. As for the video, I didnt embed it but I linked to a page that had that and other videos. Anyways under the circumstances I should not moan if video gets reposted, but I will keep commenting on out-of-sync news to try to keep things clear, if thats ok.

ChangeInLibya Libyan Dude
Green square is NOT filled with gaddafi supporters, it is a STATE TV MISINFORMATION CAMPAIGN. Confirmed by a friend that just left there

I certainly wouldnt be surprised if this was true, then again I wouldnt be that surprised if it wasnt either.

Im going to bed now, and situation in Tripoli too messy to get much sense of whats going on. Hope reports of snipers and the white 4x4's driving round are exaggerated.

very confused interview with benghazi resident just now on AJE.

benghazi army would not fire on benghazi people. tripoli army fired on benghazi army, arrested many. killed 150 benghazi army. benghazi army and people now in charge and released beng army prisoners. tripoli army ran away. benghazi now under control of the benghazi army/people.

Reports of casualties in hospitals in Tripoli are starting to emerge on twitter now, hope I dont wake up to news of a bloodbath.

where would mad dog go if he wanted to do a runner ?

I cant think of anywhere that would be a safe haven

Hard to know if that is a new clash or if its the same thing as reported many hours ago but the term 'mercenaries/special forces' replaced with 'tripoli army'.

Potentially there are a fair few safe-havens, the usual suspects plus a range of theories people will come up with based on other countries that Gadaffi has appeared to do successful business with in the past, eg Venezuela was a rumour earlier today.

When I started typing he was talking about the benghazi army being arrested and then released, and the bit about 150 army killed! which was new to me and why I was posting, and as they were trying to clarify I kept typing what they finally agreed with presenter's questions to try and get him to be clear.

Anyway, time for bed.

Yeah ..I did think possibly central America if he took a lot of gold with him ....But I think the Americans would definitely have a pop , just top stop him releasing uncomfortable stories .....

I don't think hes going to leave ...his son will ...but I think he will try to present himself as a martyr ...dying on a white stallion

Maybe we should take the opportunity and send salmond in to finish off the job with al-Megrahi

A round-up from reuters here. Probably worth a read.
