Lenovo X300 laptop released. MacBook Air deflated.

Does anyone on this thread own either of the machines or thinking about buying one? If not then why do you care so much?
I didn't realise you had to be committed to buying something first before being deemed worthy of discussing it.

This is the tech forum, where people like to talk/argue/shout/learn about all new technology. It's that simple.

Right. So if you can't find a use for something on a computer that isn't even aimed at you, then it can only be a "gimmick."

Grrreat logic!

Cheers! Why have that when you can have a 3G dongle for free on a contract of about £10pcm?

And if the mood takes then, it's a damn sight easier to pop into a local store and buy a load of DVDs/CD music releases than pissing about with transferring files on/off laptops.

I copied one film off my desktop to my lappy in about 30 seconds with USB2 :)

Of course not, I like to see whats happening on top of the range stuff as it filiters down. Agree totaly about talking and learning. Its the shouting and arugeing bit I dont get.

I've no idea what you're on about. Why would I want to spend an additional £120 per year?

And just because you have the time, energy and knowledge to track down and load up a dodgy film off the Internet, don't go thinking that everyone's the same as you.

I'm not going to bother trying to make you understand the appeal of the X300 any more as it's clear you have no idea why road warriors might appreciate its functionality and feature set.

Cos your a road worrier and want fast(ish) internet when there is no wifi. If you spending £2000 on a laptop then its not going to be breaking the bank. You can get if for half that btw.

A real road warrior would spend the money to ensure connection when they need. Every business person I know or met (journos too) use em.

"Road Warriors" :D :D

Sorry, Neo, you're right. I don't understand the appeal of it. You can get a far better laptop for half the money so no, I don't understand the appeal of it. Then again I am not a "Road Warrior", Neo. :p

P.S

You have never downloaded a dodgey album or two off me? ;)

You mean like get a laptop with 802.11abg + draft-n Wi-Fi, USB ports galore, ethernet, wireless USB, internal 3G modem and a DVD burner?

Oh hang on. That's the X300!

I love how everyone is having a right old slanging match -- yet no-one seems to have actually used either the Air or X300.

The tone of the thread has been so ill-tempered that it makes wonder: aren't there slightly more important things in life to get worked up over than the respective merits of two thin laptops?

Init! I just think both laptops aren't good value for money and are poser's toys.

Well I assume you still got to fork out the dosh for the 3g contract. If we get this on cheaper machines, my concern would be needing a seperate contract of the data side of things. If you buying a posh laptop like that I guess you don't care, just thinking more for when it filters down for us consumer types. For expample on 3 you pay £5 for a 1gig a month if you connect through the phone, £10 through the external modem. It would be nice to keep the two more seperate. Hopefully though data prices will fall and we will get more sensible data plans from all networks. A EEE pc type device with 3g on the right data plan and I might even dump the smartphone for a cheapo thing with long battery life. Sorry if I'm derailing your thread a bit now.

Dunno, but I'm pretty sure that there's slightly more important things in life to get worked up over than an Internet argument over the respective merits of two thin laptops!

:D :p

Hey feel free!

I liked the ill fated concept of the Foleo very much (small, instant-on, instant integration with a paired mobile phone's email/diary, Wi-Fi etc), but it seemed too pricey as soon as the Eee raised its head.

There were flaws in the product too, but a slim, light, cheap, fast, instant on laptop with a big battery life, full keyboard, decent screen and real easy linking to my phone would do me very nicely for weekend trips, writing jobs etc.

The Eee comes close, but the Foleo's promise* came even closer for me.

(*yes, I know its shortcomings, but different people have different needs and I wasn't alone in thinking the Foleo could have been contender)

What I think is exciting is for years we were stuck with same form factors, cheap heavy laptops aimed at having another grunt to run a desktop os, but with poor battery life or more expensive machines either compete with desktops or you could have smaller form factor. Now we're seeing companies experiment a bit more which is a good thing.

I've been using a very bog standard ultra cheap nokia the last few days and little things have impressed me, forgot about it and left it on and 3 days later it still had almost full battery, very light and its got damp and I dont care, if it dies as its cheap I wont be that bothered, but they are generally tougher then smart phones. Its also tiny and makes phone calls.

Couple that with a companion device and it would be a good combo, I don't even to link that well, I can sync both through my pc. In fact something a little bigger then my e61 which was hinged to take advantage of space, had a decent res screen would do me nicely and still fit in a pocket for other occasions when I wanted to more then just make calls. Maybe think little bigger then old psions in terms of size, but with the benerfit on modern tech. Not having to switch sims would nice as well.

Well... My CTO at work bought a Mac Air was playing around with it I for a bit while he was in a meeting. Its one of those things that once you see how light it is. you appreciate the concept and potential uses he has.

I was then hanging around with him for a bit afterwards and it was interesting how useful an ultra-light, ultra-thin laptop would be. A laptop of a decent size, but increadibly mobile...

I haven't seen the other laptop, but I've seen a fair few similar laptops to expect its not going to match up...

Yup. My opinion is people should try things before they bang on about them. That and they should try and realise that not every product is specifically targetted at them.

I'm not worked up -- it's as bemusing as watching two old drunks fighting outside a pub at closing time. Come to think of it, that would make a great advert.

MAC: "I'm a Macbook Air! Fuck off!"
PC: "I'm a Lenovo X300. No, you fuck off."
MAC: "No, you fuck off!"
PC: 'Fuck off!"
[Exchange continues ad nauseum et infinitum]

So we shouldn't have had any debates about, say, the Palm Foleo then? I recall people having quite a lot to say on the subject yet no one had ever seen one let alone tried one.

A 'road warrior' I know just bought a MacBook Air instead.
