Lenovo X300 laptop released. MacBook Air deflated.

Now, given that these are likely to be additional machines to users, style is likely to play a big role in the purchase decision
Perhaps in your world, but I'd imagine an awful lot of people would rate functionality, available ports, expandability, DVD burning, battery life, features and security over how cool it looks.

It's not my world to buy overpriced, functionally stunted laptops, that's for sure.

However, if I had the kind of cash to buy one of those machines, I'd almost certainly have more powerful machines lying around elsewhere, with all the added bells and whistles I could ever want (and many that I'll never want). TBH with that in mind, the fact that one has an ectra connector or two and promises easier expandability is neither here nor there. The Air does more than enough for the average businessman filling in a Excel table on a short flight.

Thought the battery life wasn't great on eiher machine btw

I was thinking about this the other day - the last time I put a CD/DVD in my mac was installing Leopard 4 months ago - I only use the burner for archiving and giving others pirate material and most people have a home machine for that (don't they?). I use a 4gb smartdrive for almost everything else.

Anyway look how fat it is compared with the Air:

I wouldn't buy either though, too poncey. MacBook would do me fine, macpro if I was a rich man. Windows OSs are no good to me.

How about if you're away from a home on the road and want to watch a DVD, play a game you've just bought or some music CDs?

My current UMPC laptop hasn't got a CD/DVD and boy have I missed it at times.

It's quoted as up to 10 hours with the X300's optional additional 3 cell battery. And, of course, batteries can be easily swapped.

So you'd quibble about taking a small DVD-writer along with you, but a heavy extra battery is ok?

Neither for me please.

I'm not sure how heavy the battery would be but I do know that I hate being without a built in CD/DVD player after owning such a machine for the last 4 years.

And removable batteries are well handy.

I suppose I'd make sure I had a few movie rips on it - but good point nonetheless.

How about because I don't fancy forking out for one?
And that still wouldn't get the DVDs or CDs playing, would it?

you might find theres' a linux distro which can scan the dvd's via the finger print reader and reconsitute them back into playable formats .... ;) :D

oh lord not again...

that being said the fingerprint scanner is a cool little device and is quite handy on a laptop... speeds some thingd up

I can remember being stuck in my Wi Fi-less hotel room with a pile of freshly bought CDs and DVDs and feeling very bored indeed.

:(
Reminds me of the three weeks I spent in Brussels with only MTV for company and only dial-up at the job I was on. A lot of gin was drunk... still it made me go out.

Think 'road warrior', Einstein.

Still can't really see a use for it. It is a gimmick IMO.

Oh, and it's around £1,700.

From your link, divvy!

PRICE: £1,700 (£1,998 inc VAT)

£1.7k if you are VAT registered and it would be safe to assume that 90% of people are not VAT registered therefor the price is £2,000 albeit for £2.

Last time I took my laptop anywhere where I knew there'd be no wifi or other entertainment I made sure I had a couple of films already on my HDD to watch and a stack of music to listen to. Although with such a small HDD it wouldn't leave me with much room so I'd probably have to lug another external HDD around. Great!

Ipods are now 160 Gb...

My gf asked me to put the iTunes library and the entire series of Heroes on her lappy the other day. Unfortunately the itunes is 60gb, and I only bought her the cheap 80gb harddrive which seems to only have 25gb free. Ah well..

If the drive is empty, but still 25gb, most likely it's full of bad sectors and on the way out...

This may come as a bit of a surprise to you, but not everyone has the time or inclination to go around carefully copying and loading up films to watch on their laptop when they're on the road with their job.

And if the mood takes then, it's a damn sight easier to pop into a local store and buy a load of DVDs/CD music releases than pissing about with transferring files on/off laptops.

Does anyone on this thread own either of the machines or thinking about buying one? If not then why do you care so much?

FWIW if you have data so important that you are worried about it being nicked then maybe you shouldn't be leaving it on a laptop. TBH think the average laptop theif is probably more intrested in how many bags of brown it buys rather then what's stored on it.
