Leicester Muckery

Serge Forward

Just enjoyin' my coffee.
For any urbs in Leicester or the surrounding area, I recently mentioned the launch of the Leicester Muckery* in another thread. As it's now onto its second issue, I thought I'd give it its own thread in the regional bit. The Muckery is a local working class bulletin run by a bunch of pro working class Leicesterfarians - anarchists/socialists/communists/ne'er-do-wells.

Here's our website: Leicester Muckery

And here's issue 1 (pdf!): Leicester Muckery issue 1 pdf

Issue 2 is out this weekend in time for May Day and contains articles on:
  • Health workers
  • May Day 2023
  • ‘Hard-working’ Royals
  • Police & Crime Commissioner, Rupert Matthews - it's a fair cop, guv
  • Elbit – Leicester arms manufacturer
  • Challenging schools
  • Football: FC Kolektivo Victoria
I'll post issue 2 up here later.

*The local daily shit rag is called the Leicester Mercury - see what we did there.

I was born and brought up in Leicester but haven't lived there for over 40 years.

It's changed so much I hardly recognise some parts of it now :(

Wanders off muttering about "the good old days"...

I myself worked there throughout the nineties and the Centre of the town looks way better now than it did then.It is indeed hardly recognisable as the same place with the addition of what could almost be called boulevards and enormous new shopping centres. For those who like that sort of thing.🙂

I've been here just over 20 years. It had its own buzz in the 00s but, like many town centres, Leicester's has gone down hill and the city centre has lost its shine with lots of boarded up shops.

Seemed to be buzzing alright when I passed through being between buses late last year. That was Saturday night though and there are a heck of a lot of students.

90s? 00s?

You should have seen Leicester in the 60s! :D

This Facebook group has loads of photos, most of which I'm sure won't mean anything to you.

But some of them take me right back to when I was a child. They bring back such strong memories.
