Large Fire in Elephant and Castle 28/06/2021


Fire, understood to have started in car workshop under railway arches, causes explosion at Elephant and Castle, London.

Four cars caught alight.

That's the trains fucked for a while. Even after the fire is completely put out, I suspect they'll have to do extensive safety checks on the line, judging by the footage of the thick smoke coming through the tracks...
 
There’s a route into the shopping centre demolition site running under the lines just next to the station entrance. Where the explosion seemed to come from.

Not saying the garages aren’t on fire now of course, but the initial fire seemed closer to the station entrance than the garages are.
 
The railway is an elevated section with arch premises underneath with several vehicle repair places no doubt with oxy acetaline present and propane and petrol.
NR don't let you store pressurised flammable gasses in arches and they're pretty strict about it. The car mechanics next to makerspace is all MIG/TIG for instance.
A fireball like that can easily be from liquids though.
 
After four hours, the latest seems to be that the fire is now under control, though not yet put out.

Several hours of intense flames and heat... I wonder if the structural integrity of the arches has been compromised; in which case, there are not going to be any trains running through E&C for a long time...
