There are, it seems, lots of shitty or poorly written apps in the Play store that periodically fall foul of trojans etc.
Some seem to be written like this on purpose, some are not. These kinds of apps are usually lower reputation and don't have downloads measure in the hundreds of thousands or millions like the 'big' or popular apps.

I can only suggest scanning apps using some other software like Sophos on your Android phone. I'm sure other virus scanner people do software like this, McAfee, Norton, Eset etc
