James Bond Goldfinger Aston Martin DB5 sells at auction for $6.4 million | This is Money

Back in 1965 I had the Corgi toy version of that. And apparently for a mere £87.99 I can get a Hornby 50th anniversary edition of it. Original price 10 shillings and sixpence. And it's not even gold like the original toy but silver.

There's a safety warning : "For use under adult supervision". Yes I wouldn't trust the sort of person who'd want one to be safely left alone with it.

Idiotic.

We’re mostly in our 40’s and 50’s, mostly. We’re the age group that if we’ve been flukey we can blow six mill on a car, as an investment, no one spunks that without some kind of return in mind.

Think of your kids, your nieces and nephews, would they buy that when they hit their 40’s? Of course not. Be worth £200k in 20 years.

The DB5 is one of those cars where it would be great if there were ‘re-mastered’ versions. The same body shell but modern running gear. I don’t mean re-imagined cares like the new Mini and Beetle but the original looks.

See also AC Cobra, Citroen DS and E-type...

It’d never pass modern safety standards

Singer Porsche. When that lotto check clears I’m snapping one of those bad boys up.

That exists in the form of the David Brown Speedback GT.

750,000 quid for something based on XKR running gear (which wasn't that great when it was new 15 years ago). How does "fuck off" sound?

Great car ... but what a stupid lump of cash to waste on it. I could take care of my family for ages on that, and help a lot of other people as well.

Who cares what it’s built on? Look at it. Has to be about the coolest looking thing on the road.

So Aston Martin will take your classic, rip out half the original panel work, fuck about with the engine and rip out part of the rear suspension to make it more modern. Why the hell would you do that to a classic?
Because classic cars, by and large, are fucking awful heaps of shit with terrible brakes, poor suspension and piss weak engines.

Guess it depends on how you view a car. As something to look at and make money from, or something to be driven and enjoyed.
One of the minor upsides if we do have a global recession is that it might stop people buying classic cars ( or even new high end ones) and just storing them in vaults unseen and undriven . Of course, that won’t make up for eating rats of course...

Agreed. Buy a new car. Leave the old ones for museums.

I was going to contest this point with an example of an older car that drives better than a new one but I couldn't think of any!

R32/33/34 GTR maybe... but you have to spend a lot of time and money modifying them to get the best of out them.

An NA MX-5 is undoubtedly a better car than a new MX-5 but I wouldn't fancy being in accident in one.
